That Friday Feeling – 09/10/26

, , ,

This weekend Caldy’s 1st xv have a 7.45 pm Friday night clash at Rotherham’s Clifton Lane ground, the 2nd xv are playing in the more normal Saturday 3pm slot against an always strong Lymm 2nd xv at Paton Field and the 3rd xv travel away to play Helsby’s 1st xv at 3 pm Saturday.

Rotherham v Caldy tonight 7.45 pm

Newly promoted Rotherham have made an outstanding start to life in the Elior Champ. Last season’s National One champions beat Coventry and Bedford in their first two games at Clifton Lane but came unstuck away at last season’s Champions Worcester Warriors.

Rotherham’s instant acclimatization to the strenuous demands of Champ rugby is not a surprise to knowledgeable rugby supporters. Under the guidance of their Director of Rugby Harvey Biljon, who previously guided Jersey Reds to the Championship title the Titans have recruited well and have the pedigree and the ability to secure their position in the Elior Champ.

Matt Cairns is taking a strong squad to Clifton Lane for a 7.45 pm kick off. Caldy supporters who are unable to travel can watch the match at the clubhouse. The Caldy squad is:

Caldy have only been to Clifton Lane once previously back in 2019, JJ Dickinson and Calum Ridgway the only players from that game still in a Caldy shirt today! Take a look back at a few photos from that game:

Caldy 2nd xv v Lymm 2nd xv tomorrow at 3 pm Paton Field

An opening hard-fought league away win at Wirral by 7-62 was just the start that Caldy coach Andrew Soutar would have wanted for his side in the HG Stephenson Premier League. However, this weekend Sooty believes that they will be up against one of the strongest challengers to their status as long unbeaten league champions. “We nearly lost our winning record last September against Lymm. A last-minute score allowed us to scrape home 39-36 and I expect it is going to be a really tight contest again tomorrow.”

Lymm’s 1st xv are in third position in National 2 West having won 4 of their opening 5 fixtures. This strong early league showing by Lymm’s 1st xv is particularly commendable given the significant opposition and challenges that they face competing in National 2 West.

Tomorrow, Lymm’s 1st xv travel to face Taunton and during the season amongst other long-range fixtures they will have to travel to Redruth, Exeter, Barnstaple, Plymouth (Devenport RFC), Bristol (Old Redcliffians RFC), Clifton, Cinderford (Gloucester), and Western Super Mare (Hornets). Their other ‘away’ trips to Loughborough, Hereford (Luctonians), Hinkley and Bournville are almost local derbies by comparison!

This will be a really tough fixture for Caldy’s 2nd xv and Sooty and CJ are hoping to get a lot of support from the Bank to encourage their young side. The match kicks off at 3 pm.

Andrew Soutar and Christian Jones have picked the following squad for the match against Lymm

15. G Mault, 14. F McGrath 13. E Banks 12. C Brown 11. E Edwards 10. C Attis 9. F Davies 1. M Rabbette 2. M Wilson 3. M Sangare 4. R Williams 5. M Faasavalu 6. F Collins 7. J Wilson 8. E Dale 16. T Bywater 17. C Ford 18. L Denn 20. J Done
