With 6 matches to go in the regular season the 10th placed Ravers are 16 points behind last weekend’s opponents, 6th placed Chinnor. It is accordingly now unrealistic for Caldy to achieve a top six play-off place. The focus will now be on ensuring that the Wirral side can pick up a couple more wins to keep their distance from the relegation and relegation play-off places in positions 12 -14 in the league table.
As a reference point, Caldy’s 8 wins and 46 league points so far this season is comfortably ahead of their previous best showing of 7 wins and 39 points achieved in their debut 2022/23 season.
In that first season all of Caldy’s fixtures were David v Goliath moments but none more so than on 7th January 2023 when Ealing Trailfinders first travelled to Paton Field. The imperious Trailfinders had blitzed all the previous 10 sides they had played that season picking up a perfect 10 out of 10 bonus point wins with none of the opposition teams registering even a solitary bonus point.

The Ravers’ 26-24 bonus point win was one of sports greatest ever upsets, so much so that at 3.40 pm an incredulous Editor of The Rugby Paper called their reporter asking “WTF just happened. Please, please tell me we have some pictures !”
Ealing’s form this season has been just as impressive. Twenty games in and with an almost perfect 98 league points they top the league 25 points ahead of second placed Worcester Warriors. A bonus point win at Paton Field tomorrow will assure them of yet another league title as the Warriors will not be able to overhaul Ealing’s vastly superior win record and points difference.
Caldy’s Head Coach Matt Cairns may not be banking on home advantage to rack up the Ravers’ 9th win of the season, but he will be looking for a strong committed performance as a springboard for the business end of the season.
Paton Field will welcome the Champ’s champions elect who in any other UK sport would surely be worthy of a spot on the highest rung of the ladder.
Come down to Paton Field and see some of the best rugby that the North of England has to offer.
