Caldy – That Friday Feeling 27th February ’26

, , , , ,

Last week the Ravers picked up a 4 try bonus point in the game against Worcester Warriors at the fabulous Sixways Stadium which must be just about the largest and most well-resourced stadium that Caldy have played at in a league fixture.

The Worcester supporters were interested to hear about the minor but crucial differences between Sixways and Paton Field. They acknowledged that Paton Field’s natural grass was a more suitable rugby surface than their plastic pitch and were impressed that although Caldy’s Party Stand had a somewhat lower capacity than the Cecil Duckworth stand, it was more hi-tech by design and operation being able to be wheeled in and out of Paton Field. The rationale that this was necessary so as to ensure that the supporters on JJ’s Bank have the best view in all of English rugby across to Snowdonia and the beauty of North Wales, was met with bemused incomprehension.

The Warriors’ impressive Cecil Duckworth isn’t as hi-tech as Caldy’s Party Stand

One Caldy Grandee who missed the game was 90-year-old John Butler who was feted at last Friday’s dinner in his honour in Caldy’s quaint centenary lounge. Johnny Butler’s evening included the cutting of a birthday cake baked and decorated by Elaine and Alex Wylie for JB to remember how Paton Field used to be before the RFU’s Minimum Operating Standards changed the landscape.

Tomorrow 3rd placed Bedford Blues come to Paton Field. The Blues are one of the most attacking teams in the Championship playing a most exhilarating brand of rugby. The Ravers have won only once before against Bedford back in January 2023 when the introduction of Welsh maestro Lewis Barker prompted perhaps the best ever 40 minutes of 15 a side rugby at Paton Field which ended with a Ravers win 36-28. In May 2025 a penalty by Bedford’s goal kicker Will Maisey with the last play of the game sealed a 26-29 win for the Blues. Tomorrow the Ravers will be hoping that Maisey, who has so often been the Ravers’ tormentor in chief, has left his kicking boots at home.

Lewis Barker is presently in South Africa on business and is absent from the Caldy squad which sees three changes from last week with the return of Martin Gerrard and Matt Kilcourse from injury and a promotion from the 2nd xv for Dan Rabbette.

The match kicks off at 2.00 pm with the gates open from 11.00 am.

Glynn Rankin

It is with deep regret that we have to announce the passing of Glynn Rankin.
Glynn first joined the club in the 1970’s and played Colts and Senior rugby until the end of the 80’s. He captained the Caldy 3rd xv for the 1984-85 season.
In recent years Glynn has been a solid member of the “Boys of the 80’s” who sponsor Caldy players and matches as ways of supporting the club that has been a significant part of their lives.
The funeral is being held at noon on Tuesday 24th March at Blacon crematorium, CH1 5BB.
The venue for the wake is to be confirmed and we will advise members when we know the details.

Our sincere condolences go to all his family and friends, in respect a minutes silence will be held before kick off tomorrow.
