Caldy – That Friday Feeling 24th April ’26

, , , , ,

The Ravers are very much feeling the sunshine and this gorgeous spring weather but tomorrow they will not be feeling the rugby at Paton Field. For the Champ it is a free weekend with the Ravers’ last home fixture for the 1st xv in the 25/26 season being against Doncaster Knights on 2nd May which is the first May bank holiday weekend. The weather looks promising and with it being something of a northern derby in the Champ it is sure to be a brilliant occasion particularly as there will be a few hundred past Caldy players in attendance.

Two great servants of Caldy RFC in Welsh Wizard Lewis Barker and defensive Iron Man Mike Barlow will be playing their last ever home game at Paton Field as both are retiring at the end of this season. One further great servant who has been both a former 1st xv captain and probably Caldy’s biggest ever player ( and one of the Champ Rugby’s biggest players ) The Giant Tom Sanders has already retired through injury and he will be in attendance at the past players lunch. Please do come down and enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend at Paton Field and give Lewis, Mike and Tom the appreciation they so fully deserve.

Tomorrow was going to be the opportunity for Paton Field to applaud the excellence of Caldy 2nd xv’s 7th consecutive title in the North West’s ‘IMPACT’ Premier League which they won in a close fought encounter last Friday night against Preston Grasshoppers at Lightfoot Green. Unfortunately, Wirral have conceded tomorrow’s game at Paton Field denying Sooty and CJ’s side the chance to try and record their 100th consecutive league victory and the deserved recognition from an appreciative Paton Field crowd.

The 2nd xv do have one more fixture to fulfill next Saturday 2nd May when they take on Chester in the Cup Final which will take place at Ormskirk RFC’s ground. If Caldy’s 2nd xv manage to win that game they will have the truly staggering record since they were last beaten in April 2019, of 99 league wins and 18 cup wins. This record doesn’t include the 28 wins via concessions by the opposition or the 2 terrific away wins in ‘friendlies’ against Jersey.

Despite the 1st xv and the 2nd xv having no game tomorrow the 3rd xv are in action against New Brighton’s 2nd xv away at Reeds Lane. The match which kicks off at 3 pm features a father and son combo with Caldy legend Matt Pennington turning out with his son Sylvain.

Caldy’s 3rd xv squad for the division 3 West fixture against New Brighton is as follows:

  1. Matty Sangare
  2. Grant Wratten
  3. Harry Evans
  4. Craig Smithson
  5. Tom Hazleton
  6. Matty Mountney
  7. Mayson Jones
  8. Dave Edge
  9. Matt Pennington
  10. Felix Clarke
  11. Sylvain Pennington
  12. Rhys Hughes
  13. Tom Shanahan
  14. Jack Paziuk
  15. Harri Williams
  16. Tom Hughes
  17. Kit Austin
  18. Zak Stanley
  19. Bobby Banks

The game at New Brighton FC RU  kick offs at 3.00 pm at Reeds Lane, Wirral CH46 3RH
It’s only 10 minutes drive away so please make the very short trip tomorrow to support the Rav3rs !
