Caldy – That Friday Feeling 10th Oct ’25
Light winds, sunny intervals with no chance of rain is the perfect weather forecast for ‘Ladies Day’ at Paton Field which will be supporting Clatterbridge and breast cancer charities. The term Ladies Day was first mentioned in a poem penned in 1823 describing the scene at Royal Ascot where ‘the women like angels look sweetly divine’. Although time and social mores have moved on, tomorrow Paton Field will be the Wirral’s Royal Ascot for the day particularly as one of English Rugby’s most august clubs are the visitors.
Caldy have played Richmond five times previously. On the first occasion in 2012 it was the play – off match for promotion to National One where the Ravers fell just short losing in the final minutes of extra time after playing more than 100 minutes with only 14 men. The sides didn’t meet again until the Ravers entered the Championship in the 2022/23 season and faced Richmond at the Richmond Athletic Ground in their first away fixture. Richmond raced into a substantial lead racking up their try bonus point with only 20 minutes played and it looked as though Caldy were going to be on the wrong end of a hammering. Nick Royle’s ‘worldy’ of a try just before half time changed everything and the Ravers picked up their first win on the road 34-32. No one will ever tire of watching Nick Royle’s wonder try.
The Ravers and Richmond clashed another 3 times that season, twice in the Championship Cup and once in the league fixture at Paton Field. The final cup match was made memorable by the hugely entertaining lunchtime speech by Richmond’s then President Chris Mills who also post-match stepped in to take on the Ravers’ best in individual and team pint races. Caldy playing against Richmond has always been a terrific occasion with both clubs determined to preserve the unique heritage of community rugby at its best despite the pressure which accompanies life in the Champ.
After a couple of seasons in National 1 Richmond bounced back into the Champ and last weekend won against a strong Chinnor side in a manner which impressed Caldy’s Head Coach Matt Cairns. “We watched the video of Richmond’s 18-13 win against Chinnor. They put in a terrific physical performance against a powerful Chinnor side who beat us at Paton Field in our final pre-season game. We are going to have to be at our very best if we are to make it back-to-back wins after last week’s success against London Scottish.”

Finally a massive thank you to our special guests at last Saturday’s Caldy RugbyFest – Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 winner, Holly Aitchison, & former England Captain & Women’s Rugby World Cup 1994 winner, Gill Burns MBE.
What a day ! Despite the wind and rain of storm Amy, we had an incredible turnout for our girls rugby taster session with so many young players braving the elements to give rugby a try for the very first time.
Huge credit to all the coaches, volunteers, and parents who made it happen, and to every single girl who came down with a smile and gave it their all. The future of women’s rugby is looking very bright at Caldy !
