Coventry’s squad depth proved the difference as Caldy’s valiant effort ran out of steam in the final 20 minutes.

Having led 17-14 at half-time, the full-time conditioning and the midfield carries of the fully professional Coventry squad eventually told on the part-time Ravers.

“We are disappointed not to get anything out of the game” said Caldy’s director of rugby Gareth Davies. “I thought we were superb in the first half and well worthy of our lead but the second half was a different story. Coventry’s strength in depth showed through and we struggled for both territory and possession. However, there are some positives to take from the game particularly the first half performance.”

A planned move from the base of a scrum put Caldy centre Michael Barlow in for the opening score but somewhat against the run of play the visitors struck back a few minutes later through Morgan Strong.

Caldy went ahead 10-7 from a Kieran Wilkinson penalty and were playing the more fluent rugby. It was an unexpected contrast of styles with Caldy’s backs outplaying Coventry’s forward dominated physicality. Repeatedly moving the point of attack to get their pacy wingers Will Robinson and Obi Ene into the game eventually paid dividends for the Ravers. The outstanding Ene leapt high to win a contested kick and then sparked the best move of the match. With forwards and backs combining the ball traversed the pitch a couple of times before tight head prop Ryan Higginson went in at the corner to push the Ravers into a deserved 17-7 lead.

Then the wheels started to work loose. The loss of Caldy’s imposing second row Max Loboda to injury, tipped the forward battle decisively in favour of the visitors. Their powerful mid field carries were taking their toll and Coventry scored just before the interval through second row Senitiki Nayalo. They started the second period in similar fashion with a try and a third successful conversion by stand off Joshua Thomas to take a slender 17-21 lead.

Although a 60-minute try by Connor Wilkinson nudged the Ravers back ahead the power of the professional side told in the final quarter. Tries by Daffyd, Rhys Tiueti and Ewan Baker sealed the bonus point win for Coventry.
