Caldy ….……… 28 pts

Conversions: K Wilkinson 6, 46, 51, Kilcourse 21

Chinnor ………. 36 pts

Conversions: Warboys 3, 18, 28, 48
Penalty: Warboys 64

A delighted Nick Easter acknowledged an exceptionally good winning performance by Chinnor in testing conditions at Paton Field.

“That is the best we have played this season, our ball retention was excellent, and we had the required patience when we got into the Caldy 22. We have worked hard on these aspects of our game and it so pleasing to see it come good on the pitch. However, although the majority of our defensive work was good, we cannot be happy at leaking four tries.”

Chinnor started with a bang, scoring under the posts after only 2 minutes and Caldy were playing catch up for the next 78 minutes. Whilst the home side continually responded to Chinnor’s scoring they never got in front. The game was dominated by set piece scoring with six of the game’s nine tries coming from driving mauls. Chinnor’s four from their pack came through a brace by Ramaz Rukhadze and one each by his front row colleagues Christopher Moore and Robin Hardwick. The visitors’ scoring was completed through a try by centre Thomas Watson and four conversions and a penalty from the boot of George Worboys.

The Ravers picked up their consolation bonus point from a couple of tries by hooker Ollie Hearn and two tries by backs Ollie Wynn and Obi Ene.

The view from Caldy’s Bank was that Chinnor was the best side to visit Paton Field this season. Chinnor were flawless in the line out, rarely kicked away possession and their pace, direct running and greater physicality kept the Ravers on the back foot for lengthy periods.

The only consolation the Wirral side can take from an uncharacteristically passive performance was the brilliance of their two open field scores. Scrum half Ollie Wynn’s interception on the halfway line saw him dance through the Chinnor defence to bring the scores back level after seven minutes and in the game’s best passage of rugby, replacement scrum half Thomas Akehurst’s quick thinking gave the Ravers hope. A quick tap from a free kick inside the Caldy 22 saw the ball moved out to stand off Kieran Wilkinson whose dinked ball over the top was gathered by speedster Obi Ene who raced in for Caldy’s third score.

Former RFU President Rob Udwin viewed the game as “A great advert for Champ rugby with a high level of skill and intensity in testing conditions.”

Match report thanks to Paul Clark

The Senior Colts travelled to Whitchurch on Sunday for their second League game and came away with a very convincing 76-24 victory, in a wonderful display of hard running, free flowing rugby, scoring 12 tries in the process !

Having not been to Whitchurch in a couple of seasons, and not registering a win there this decade, we were expecting a tightly fought battle. We had conceded early in our last two games, so the lads were focussed on providing a “Caldy Welcome” and ensuring we started strong. The lads certainly did that with early tries from Dylan Jones, sniping from a ruck, and Drew Woodward surging down the left wing.

Whitchurch hit quickly back following a lapse in defensive discipline, but order was soon restored through a surging run from Louis Hayes-Green and the unstoppable Matthieu Sangare who racked up the first and second of his 4 tries for the day powering through. Tom Hazleton rounded off the scoring in the first half to leave us 36-5 up at the break.

The second half continued in similar fashion with 3 early tries scored through Ruben Smith, Sylvain Pennington and Matthieu’s third. At 47 points ahead, indiscipline crept into the lads’ game and the penalty count soared in Whitchurch’s favour. 3 quick fire tries through strong mauling and lax tackling brought Whitchurch good reward for staying in the game and not giving up the fight. Caldy regrouped and finished the match in fine style running in another 3 tries through Frankie Johnstone, Louis Hayes-Green’s second and Mathieu’s fourth !

Fantastic to see the lads translate their hard work from training on a Thursday night into some scintillating attacking play on a Sunday – they certainly put on a good show for all those parents and supporters who made the trip with us ! After just two games, the Senior Colts are the early leaders of the NW League A but there’s is a very long way to go. Next match is away to Newport Salop on Sunday 14th December.

u17s Junior Colts NW League A
Wirral u17s Junior Colts ……….. 31 pts
Caldy u17s Junior Colts ………. 10 pts

Our Junior colts lost 31-10 at Wirral last weekend in a hard fought game. First half was very close with Wirral only leading by 4 from 2 conversions we missed. We then lost an important player due to injury ( he’s ok) just before half time . Second half was a battle and our boys dug deep with no scores until the last 10 minutes when Wirral scored two more tries thanks to their effective mawl.
