Played in the toughest of conditions, it was certainly one for the purists. Huge credit to the 2,107 in attendance for continuing to back their teams. Try scorer, Lucas Titherington said: “Gritty is the perfect word for it. We knew all week that it was going to be a tough contest so glad to get the win.” It was tough viewing at times with handling errors aplenty and countless kicks, both fly halves trading a penalty apiece for a 3-3 scoreline at the break. Bedford finally broke through a resilient Caldy defence as Will Maisey scored with a fine solo effort. Anything Maisey can do, Caldy’s Kieran Wilkinson was trying to do better and his opportunistic breakaway on the hour was one of the standout moments in a forwards dominated game. ![]() Image – Kieran Free Maisey had been chipping away at the scoreboard throughout the contest, totalling 15 points individually, and that left the scores at 13-8 heading into the final passage. Caldy had to go from deep, but they threw an intercept attempting to breakaway, leaving Titherington to charge to the line and rip away the visitors’ losing bonus point. Caldy head coach Matt Cairns commented: “Fair play to Bedford because I thought they controlled the middle of the pitch much better than we did – they made fewer mistakes and that’s probably what’s cost us. If you’d have offered me 23 points in mid-November, I’d have definitely taken it. We’ll rest up and get ready to go again.” ![]() Image – Champ Rugby Bedford Blues : James, Hutler (Le Bourgeois 59), Worth, Titherington, Adamson, Maisey, Day (c), Jack (Cowell 62), Herman (Fish 55), Heffernan, Evans (Appleby 65), Ward, Tuilagi, Sylvester (Finch 78), Uru, Not used: Royston, Lennon, Price Caldy : Hyde (Roberts 52), Tudor, C Wilkinson, Barlow (Barker 67), Ene ( Olyott 47 ), K Wilkinson, Wynn (Akehurst 62), Weatherby (Rushton 55), Gallagher (Hearn 52), Sproston (Higginson 55), Gerrard, Sanders, Logan, Owen, Dickinson (c) (Jones 47) Referee : Charlie Gayther Attendance : 2,107 – NOWIRUL Bathtime Premier League Macclesfield 2nd xv …….. 10 pts Caldy 2nd xv ……………….. 31 pts Caldy 2nd xv secured another impressive away win at Macclesfield making it 8 out of 8 this season to remain unbeaten and top of the Premier League table leading second placed Preston Grasshoppers 2nd xv by 2 points. On a bright and unseasonally warm November afternoon, the Senior Colts arrived at Paton Field in fine fettle with a very strong squad of 24 looking to make their mark. The game didn’t quite start to plan though with Lymm straight out of the blocks on the attack. A scrum deep in Caldy’s 22 was moved left and some uncharacteristic lax tackling allowed Lymm’s strong centre in under the posts. 0-7. This woke the lads up – the Colts reacted straight from the restart – nailing Lymm’s player as he caught the ball, turning the ball over and moving the ball right to Luis Thomason who put a lovely grubber through which he picked up and scored. 5-7. From there, the Colts turned on the power, dominating the set piece and relentless in defence. Strong determined line breaks turned pressure into points as Drew Woodward, Jack Phythian and Louis Hayes- Green scored tries. Meanwhile Jamie Arista was causing problems for his Dad by booting conversions into the gardens behind the posts. 24-7 at half time and a powerful performance. In the second half, coaches asked the lads to stay true to their processes and maintain their aggressive defence and concede no points. The lads duly delivered with another 3 tries in the second half through: Tom Hazleton from a forwards Thursday night training move; Jamie Arista, from a strike backs move; and Bobby Banks who scored his 3rd try in 2 games against Lymm this season. Lymm typically never gave up, but the Colts aggressive defence ensured their lines were not breached in the second half ending the game 45-7 winners. A resounding victory with perhaps some points left on the table. Next up is the big match versus Chester at home on Sunday, where the lads will need to be fully on point to prevail.
