Matt Gallagher shot to the top of the Champ’s try scoring standings with a hat-trick of tries as Caldy continued their best ever start to a season in tier two.

The Ravers scored five tries in their first home fixture of the campaign to demolish Richmond, with scrum-half Aneurin Thomas and hooker Ollie Hearn also dotting down.

Gallagher, Caldy’s hat-trick hero, said: “It was tough, we knew it was going to be. Richmond are a young newly promoted team coming off a win last week. We made hard work of it, but as a team we dug in as they came back in the second half, and it shows the fight we’ve got this year, and how settled we are after a good pre-season. The conditions allowed us to fire more shots, better set-piece, lineouts were easier, kicking options were better and it allowed us to express ourselves in attack.”

Despite a patchy sky, the weather was kinder than Storm Amy last week for Caldy’s Ladies Day fixture, and the pink flares amid a bumper crowd didn’t have to wait long for something to celebrate when Gallagher sprinted down the right from more than 40 metres out to open the scoring.

The pink-shirted Ravers doubled their lead on the cusp of half-hour; fly-half Kieran Wilkinson nicked the ball from a Richmond ruck before gathering after a fumble to free Will Robinson and a two-on-one saw the winger offload to scrum-half Aneurin Thomas who dotted down.

The Surrey side got a purple patch, full-back Greg Kitson ran from deep, shimmying past several defenders to make 50 metres before scrum-half Alex Schwarz got the better of Caldy’s last man and dashed over by the right post.

Four minutes later it was the turn of Richmond’s forwards with several pick-and-goes before George Nugent scurried over the whitewash. Callum Grieve’s conversion put the visitors ahead, but Gallagher splintered off two driving mauls either side of half-time to earn his hat-trick and re-assert Caldy’s lead.

Outside centre Paddy Case chip-and-chased from halfway to score and keep Richmond in it, until Ravers’ replacement Hearn scored from a lineout drive to complete Caldy’s victory.

Richmond coach Nic Rouse said: “We did well to get ourselves back in the game and we had opportunities to win with five minutes to go, but unfortunately our discipline went against us, so it didn’t go our way.”
