Clapping their travelling fans and enjoying jugs of beer in the sun were the order of the day for Ealing after they wrapped up their third Championship title in four years.

The celebrations flowed after the champions made it back-to-back titles with a professional six-try victory over Caldy led by their try-scoring skipper Mike Willemse.

Ealing director of rugby Ben Ward said: “I’m delighted for the boys more than anything. There’s quite a bit of relief to get the job done. It was a tough game, Caldy are a dangerous side.

“Mikey’s led the side really well all season, he did so again today. Craig Hampson and Craig Willis both put in really strong performances, as did Jordan Holgate and Rob Farrar. They’ve been tremendous all season, it’s a younger group and they deserve the plaudits as they’re a real credit to English rugby.”

It took Ealing barely two minutes to open the scoring. After earning a line-out 10 metres from Caldy’s try line, the Middlesex men whipped the ball crossfield where scrum-half Hampson slipped round two defenders to dot down right of the posts.

Ealing dominated early on with their breakdown laying the platform before Hampson set-up outside-centre Francis Moore to double the visitors’ lead.

Caldy went up a gear to put in their best half-an hour of the season, pinning the green shirts into their own 22 area. But despite the referee blowing for eight Ealing fouls, no cards were shown and the Middlesex men kept their defensive record intact.

An injury to Caldy blindside Jos Gilmore saw the game halted for 15 minutes just before half-time as he was stretchered off. Ealing restarted sharply after half-time. Within two minutes Holgate charged through on the right before full-back Tobi Wilson’s looping pass set up wing Angus Kernohan to score.

Caldy broke their white line fever with hooker Matt Gallagher dashing over from a well-worked training ground move.

But then it was all Ealing. Willis handed off two defenders to wrestle over before Willemse scored from a driving maul and Farrar powered over from 25 metres out.

Caldy head coach Matt Cairns said: “The scoreline doesn’t reflect the performances. After the first five minutes we dominated large spells of territory and possession. We didn’t get our reward for that dominance which was disappointing.”
“The second half was a bit different and, fair play to Ealing, they showed why they’re champions.”
