A warm evening but with a real nip in the air after sundown was not what rugby supporters are used to experiencing with 3 further games still to go before the end of the season. But it worked for Caldy as their bonus point win extended the gap over bottom side Cambridge. The match was not as close as the score suggested. Playing a wide and expansive style, which is normally the trademark of the home side, Caldy dominated the first half and in truth should have gone in at the break with more than a 10-15 lead. Nottingham’s impressive defence of Caldy’s driving maul had kept them in the game but throughout the 80 minutes they could do little about the blistering pace and power of Will Robinson. The young Caldy winger started his hat trick on 13 minutes after a delightful interlude with Matt Kilcourse sent him in at the corner. With the Ravers moving the ball at every opportunity it wasn’t long before blindside flanker Jos Gilmore burst out of his 22 and galloped the length of the pitch to bring up Caldy’s second score. ![]() ![]() ![]() Images – Steve Flynn A penalty and a converted try by Nottingham just about kept them in touch at the break but some inspired words from their coaching staff fired them up for the second 40. A Lewis Barker penalty and another Robbo try pushed the lead out to 10-22 before the Archers hit back with a converted try by replacement hooker Jack Dickinson quickly followed by a score by their most dangerous player winger Ryan Olofowela. 22-22 and for the first time the game looked to be in the balance. However, Caldy’s replacement scrum half Dom Hanson reasserted the Ravers’ lead with a terrific 50 metre run down the right wing and to make sure, Will Robinson brought up his hat trick with another fine try. In the final moments the Archers did close the gap with a final try bringing the final score to 29- 34. Caldy’s Director of Rugby Gareth Davis was pleased with the bonus point win. “We have lost out a number of times by only a few points, so it was pleasing to get this one over the line. Despite us only having 4 wins so far, the season has been successful in both the development of our all-round game and the increasing depth in our squad.” Next Saturday, 17th May the Ravers take on league leaders Ealing at Paton Field. Such is the strength of the opponents the Ravers will need the biggest and most vociferous crowd of the season if they are going to upset the odds. ![]() ![]() Images – Steve Flynn Nottingham : Stapley (Mercer 62), Williams (c), Christian-Goss, Parks (Pohe 59), Olowofela, (Dickinson 50), Threlfall, Goodwin (Yarnell 59), Sio (van der Flier 54), Clayton, Richardson (Loman 54), Carnduff (Thomas 55), Manz, Wright (Green 54), Kelly, Cherry.
