PIRATES survived a lacklustre first-half to grind out a bonus point win over Championship strugglers Caldy whose two points were the least they deserved.

Scrum-half Dom Hanson’s second try on 79 minutes narrowed the gap to three points meaning only replacement Iwan Jenkins’ penalty for Pirates six minutes earlier separated the sides.

“I would have liked us to have been a bit more well-oiled than that,” said Pirates coach Gavin Cattle. “There wasn’t a lot of energy in the first half and Caldy are a good mauling team. It’s a new group on a learning journey and we were a bit clunky at times.”

Caldy should have had more than a 12-5 half-time lead after an aggressive display built on a solid set-piece but handling errors cost them the chance of adding to their two first-half tries.

A rock-solid scrum and dominant lineout provided ample possession after they opened the scoring inside two minutes with a slow-motion lineout drive trundling Callum Ridgway over.

Pirates responded with Harry Hocking’s catch and drive try after Caldy fullback Matt Kilcourse was yellow carded for a deliberate knock-on as Hocking grabbed an interception and tried to get his pass away.

Mistakes came thick and fast from both sides with Hanson knocking on as took a quick tap penalty but Caldy’s pressure paid off when Charlie Hyde, with a two-man overlap, chose to go it alone to dive over with Lewis Barker converting.

Pirates, introducing Charlie Rice for lock Mike Etete after only 40 minutes of his first start, upped the tempo after the interval with prop Billy Young delivering a big 80-minute performance.

It took only four minutes for Harry Yates to burst through and put Dan Hiscocks in between the posts for Bruce Houston to level with the conversion. Six minutes later a Pirates lineout drive was illegally pulled down with Andy Wigley awarding a penalty try and despatching Caldy skipper JJ Dickinson to the bin.

A back row try, made by Matt Cannon and debutant Jack Forsythe, on loan from Exeter, saw Pirates captain Alex Everett charge to the line and Houston stretched the lead to 24-12.

Caldy responded with Hanson’s first try, made by replacement Jacob Mitchell but Jenkins made a try-saving tackle before adding a penalty to give Pirates the safety net which proved crucial after Nick Royle kicked ahead for Hanson to score his second try, converted by Barker.
