Saturday 2nd May – Elior Champ Rugby Match report – The Rugby Paper Caldy …………………………. 17 pts Tries: Owen 42, Gallagher 54, Gallagher 75 Conversion: Wilkinson 43 Doncaster Knights ……… 37 pts Tries: Viliamu 17, Edwards 29, Fox 34, Hopkinson 39, Olowofela 47 Conversions: Bunting 29, 40, 47 Penalties: Bunting 45; Bennett 80 Doncaster climbed to ninth in the table ahead of the final round after a clinical first-half display laid the platform for a deserved victory on the Wirral. Knights were ruthless before the break, scoring four unanswered tries and effectively settle the contest despite a much-improved second-half showing from the hosts for whom prop Nathan “Bushy” Rushton was making his 200th appearance. After an even opening quarter, Doncaster struck first on 17 minutes when No.8 East Timor Viliamu powered over following Benjamin Chapman’s disruption at a Caldy lineout and sustained pressure close to the line. Caldy had enjoyed promising territory but were punished again before the half-hour. A strong attacking spell broke down inside the Doncaster 22, and the visitors countered sharply from distance, moving the ball through hands before Connor Edwards finished. Doncaster’s cutting edge continued to expose Caldy defensively. Scrum-half Oliver Fox crossed on 35 minutes after another slick attacking move, and lock Morgan Jones added the fourth try just before the interval to secure the bonus point. Morgan Bunting converted both, sending Doncaster in 24-0 ahead at the break. Caldy responded immediately after half-time when flanker Daniel Owen forced his way over, giving the home support hope on Rushton’s landmark day. However, despite Jones being shown a yellow card early in the second period, Doncaster quickly regained control. Bunting slotted a penalty before replacement winger Kehinde Olowofela, on for his brother Taiye, crossed soon after joining the action to stretch the lead to 34-7. To their credit, Caldy refused to fold and again showed the strength of their driving maul. Replacement hooker Matthew Gallagher crossed twice from close range, the first after sustained pressure and the second from a wide move finished in the corner, as the home side at least restored some pride. ![]() ![]() ![]() All images thanks to Barry MacDonald Russell Bennett’s late penalty completed the scoring and capped a composed away display from Doncaster. Caldy’s second-half spirit was evident, but their inability to convert early pressure, combined with Doncaster’s superior finishing and clinical counter-attacking, proved decisive. For the Knights, Edwards, Fox and Bunting were influential throughout as they secured an important win heading into the final weekend. ![]() ![]() Stats & images thanks to Elior Champ Rugby Oval Insights – Saturday 2nd May – Barry Allen Memorial Cup Final Chester 2nd xv …………..… 38 pts Caldy 2nd xv …………………. 40 pts A huge result for the lads on Saturday afternoon at Ormskirk RUFC, digging deep to edge Chester 40-38 and cap off an unbelievable season in style.
