3rd xv result – New Brighton 22 – 60 Caldy

Caldy Rav3rs squad bask in glory

Saturday 25th April – NOWIRUL Div 3 West
New Brighton 2nd xv ….… 22 pts
Caldy 3rd xv …………………. 60 pts

Match report thanks to Dave Arthur, all images thanks to Barry MacDonald

At the final whistle, the curtain came down on a season that has provided 63 players with 3rd team match day experience and without doubt, it was a hugely positive finale.
The mix of seasoned, time-served stalwarts, young men of proven ability and some new emerging talent combined to overwhelm a capable opposition. No one took a backward step in defence and the verve and ambition in attack was genuinely entertaining. A score or so from the club turned out to offer support and were duly treated to a terrific spectacle in the sunshine.
Even your excitable reporter joined in, running, linesman’s flag in hand, and, at full tilt, being scythed down mercilessly by the 22 meter flag, to win “Dick of the Day”. There were no other contenders for the title to be fair, as the players put in such a strong all round performance.
High quality handling, hard tackling, some really good lines and high energy all over the pitch, delivered a win by 12 tries to 3.

Caldy scorers:
Tries : Jack Paziuk x 3, Matti Sangare  x 2, Harri Williams x 2, Felix Clarke, Craig Smithson, Bobby Banks
Conversions: Felix Clarke x 3, Harri Williams x 2

Jack Paziuk races away for his hat-trick of tries

Season Summary:
Saturday’s win took Caldy 3rd xv above New Brighton 2nd xv to finish 5th in the NOWIRUL Div 3 West league, behind, but level on wins and draws with Port Sunlight 1st xv and Capenhurst 1st xv. We only had 12 matches, but 63 players pulled on the jersey for a squad that conceded 326 points, but scored 411.
Our development brief was answered by fielding several regular players from the Senior Colts who did sterling service, alongside the strong core of more experienced players; in addition and very encouragingly, five Junior Colts have now experienced adult rugby and are eager to play Rav3rs rugby again next season.

Harri Williams steps on the gas

Mattie Sangare bursts through

Felix Clark sidesteps into space

Caldy 3rd xv player stat highlights for the season:

  • Matti Sangare scored 6 tries from prop, none of which was from close range, as far as I remember ( and last Saturday saw him bulldozing through from about 50 yards or more ! ).
  • Felix Clarke also scored 6 tries and contributed 23 conversions, thus reaching 76 points.
  • Harri Williams scored 11 tries, 11 conversions and a penalty to deliver 80 points from his leading 11 appearances ( alongside Dave Edge also on 11 appearances ).

None of the above would have been achieved, indeed none would have been possible, without the tireless work of our illustrious leader, Tom “Shanners” Shanahan. It was only his unstinting hard work that made it all possible and his leadership on the playing field was no less important and inspiring.
Thanks, Shanners.

It was again a season that saw huge improvement in our players in all facets of the game and I look forward to next season with undimmed relish and enthusiasm.
C’mon you Rav3rs !

Congratulations to :-

Caldy u16s Junior Rugby Cup winning squad

This is a unique and well attended annual junior rugby event, which wouldn’t happen without the help of the army of parent volunteers across all age groups. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed both behind the scenes and on the day to ensure a smooth running and enjoyable festival for all.

I also want to thank our catering staff, burger van, ice cream vans, homemade cake stand and Ginger Cat coffee truck, parking co-ordinator Steve Leek, multiple first aiders, Tim Kilpatrick for programme production, MADS Refs, Wirral Awards for supplying the trophies, Kieran Free for photography, John and Phil Wylie and the Last of the Summer Wine gang for all their help preparing the pitches and facilities.

A final big thank for all the great regional rugby clubs for sticking with it when the showers arrived and for making it such an enjoyable occasion, creating more memories for the players.

Roll on next year and the 34th Caldy Junior Rugby Festival !
