Ampthill scored over 60 points for the third straight match at Dillingham Park, scoring 10 tries to thrash Caldy and pick up a fifth consecutive league victory, the Mob’s longest ever winning streak in the second tier.

Ampthill player-coach Richard Barrington said: “It was a really tough first half, Caldy have a strong forward pack, but in the second half we took our attacking game to a new level which was pleasing.”

The Ravers raced into a 10-point after 13 minutes. Kennedy Sylvester illegally stopped a Caldy rolling maul near the try line in the sixth minute, resulting in a penalty try and a yellow card to the Ampthill lock, before Caldy flyhalf Kieran Wilkinson slotted a penalty.

The Mob reduced Caldy’s lead to three points three minutes later with Sione Va’enuku applying a simple finish from close range.Ampthill scored two more tries in the last 10 minutes of the first half to take a 19-10 lead into the break. Kennedy Sylvester forced his way over in the 30th minute, and seven minutes later Efan Jones dotted down.

The Mob secured the try bonus-point in the 51st minute after a superb solo run from Va’enuku who broke a tackle and weaved his way to the line from just outside the Caldy 22.

Ampthill extended their lead with Valentino Mapapalnagi forcing his way across the whitewash in the 56th and 60th minute to push the lead to 40-10.The Mob continued to play with a lot of attacking freedom, and just four minutes Va’enuku sealed his hat-trick, finishing in the left hand corner after sublime passage of play from the hosts.

Caldy scored their only try of the second half with eight minutes remaining, with winger Will Robinson having acres of space to walk it in from close range on the left hand side.

Ampthill scored three tries in the final six minute with Finn Keylock, Barney Merrett and Oscar Wilson scoring with ease to put the gloss on a thumping win.

Caldy head coach Matt Cairns said: “Our set-piece wasn’t good enough in the second half, we coughed up three or four opportunities in their 22 at 19-10, and we fell apart in the last 20 minutes which isn’t good for us.”

A very well-deserved victory away at Newton-Le-Willows, saw an encouraging blend of youth and experience. It was just what the third team is intended to deliver and with a slew of junior colts making their debut, to join Kit Austin as full Rav3rs, and a solid core of more experienced players, it was terrific to see the cohesion, courage and commitment on display from all.
Jack “Paz” Paziuk made a welcome return, scoring, tackling ferociously and being reminded, as he said, just how much physicality is involved in a game ! Olly Last clearly enjoyed his afternoon and Harri Williams mad a huge contribution from fullback with his elusive running.
The junior colts did themselves proud, mixing it in the forwards, delivering tremendous displays in the back row and eventually, in uncontested set pieces, in the 2nd row, too.
It was a keenly contested, but good natured game, as reported by the ref, who said it had been his favourite game of the season. We were pleased that he had no need to brandish cards, with Newton-le-Willows contributing in no small way to that, with one player being asked to cool his heels for a few minutes, the only ref intervention of note.
Getting a win on the road, with a fine display of open, running rugby was enormously rewarding for all involved. New Brighton 2s away next Saturday will complete the season, but this was a terrific performance, which promises much for next.
Tries scorers: Jack Formela, Jack Paziuk, Harri Williams, Craig Smithson, Magnus Tunstall-Wood, Kit Austin, Tom Marray
Harri Williams got 4 conversions, Tom Marray finished with 2 conversions and Dave Edge finished with two broken fingers.
(If you count the points, the score actually adds up to 47, as confirmed by the ref.)
C’mon, you Rav3rs !

Sunday 19th April – u18s Cheshire Cup Final
Chester u18s ………….… 34 pts
Caldy u18s ……………….. 15 pts

The Senior Colts played their final ever junior game of rugby on Sunday, fittingly in the Senior Colts Cheshire Cup Final against old rivals Chester. Sadly the lads didn’t get the result their hard work deserved, beaten 34-15 by a very good Chester side.
The first half started as a very tight and feisty affair as neither side gave no quarter and a kicking battle ensued to gain any territory.
Chester eventually drew first blood 20 minutes in with a mauled try from a breakdown penalty. This gave Chester a head of steam and a couple of more tries quickly followed before half time through some slick offloading. 17-0 at the break, but the lads were not downhearted – we had visited the red zone a couple of times in the first half without converting dominance into points.
Caldy tore into Chester at the start of the second half and Louis Hayes-Green scored a try from a tap penalty maul. 17-5. A dubious penalty and a try from a pass that wouldn’t have looked out of place on the gridiron put Chester well into the lead, but still the lads wouldn’t give up, scoring the last two tries of the game through Will Hollis and Jamie Arista. The lads certainly didn’t get the rub of the green at the breakdown, but Chester were deserved winners being more clinical in the red zone out-scoring us 5 tries to 3.
Nevertheless we were incredibly proud of the lads – they have been brilliant for the last 13 years and we wish them all the best as they progress into Senior rugby next season. We look forward to watching them from JJ’s Bank in the seasons to come !
