Bedford Blues hung on to close out a bonus point win at Paton Field. The win lifts them up to second in the table, three points ahead of Worcester. Bedford’s Director of Rugby Mike Rayer acknowledged how big a tussle it was. he said: “Paton Field is a tough place to come, and we had to soak up a lot of pressure in the last quarter. We are relieved to be leaving with the bonus point win.”

The pre match expectation of dazzling rugby from Bedford’s quicksilver backline matched against Caldy’s more pragmatic forward oriented approach was somewhat upended. The visitors’ heavy artillery led by the formidable Fred Tuilagi set the tone for this thunderous encounter.

The Ravers opened the scoring after a succession of penalties and lineout drives were capitalised on through a delightful chip into space by Ravers’ playmaker Kieran Wilkinson. Winger Rhys Tudor was the first to react and, despite having to juggle the ball, touched down for the opening score.

The next 15 minutes produced a burst of scoring. Two quick unconverted tries by Bedford second row Ilan Evans and winger George Worth were followed by a Charlie Hyde score for the Ravers. The home side’s 14-10 lead was quickly cancelled out through two further Bedford tries by Tuilagi and Joseph Conway. The four-try bonus point had been secured by Bedford but, with the normally dependable Will Maisey missing all four kicks, the Ravers were still in touch.

For the next 30 minutes the Blues threw everything at Caldy, but they couldn’t dent the Ravers’ defensive line. A Maisey penalty was the Blues sole second half score and when Caldy’s Sam Olyott crossed for a home score the Ravers and their supporters ratcheted up the pressure.

However, despite forcing a succession of defensive five metre penalties the Ravers were unable to gain any reward from the scoreboard or the officials, and the Blues hung on for the win.

Caldy’s DOR Gareth Davies was pleased with the home performance but not the result. “Over the last fortnight we have proved that our squad can live with the Champ’s big dogs. It is now time for us to kick on.”
