Caldy 2nd xv came up against a very well drilled and resilient Manchester 2nd xv on Saturday. Manchester dominated possession for long periods of time but simply could not find a way to break through Caldy’s dogged defensive line. Caldy’s determination was rewarded to devastating effect with a series of break away’s and a fantastic display of counter attacking, running rugby which resulted in 9 tries to nil.

Caldy 2nd xv have now won 12 out of 12 this season to remain unbeaten in the Premier League, leading second placed Preston Grasshoppers 2nd xv, who have a game in hand, by 9 points.
Next up is a top of the table clash at home v Preston Grasshoppers 2nd xv on Saturday 14th February 2026. This upcoming game is not to be missed so put the date in your diary to get down to Paton Field on Valentines Day.

Last Saturday’s Caldy 2nd xv squad included 8 players from our 2024 Senior Colts, 3 of whom have also played Caldy 1st xv Champ Rugby. A fantastic success story to inspire all future Ravers currently on their rugby journeys through our minis, juniors and colts teams !

Halbro NW Senior Colts League A – Sunday 18th January 2026
Caldy u18s ……………. 21 pts

Stockport u18s ……… 14 pts
Match report thanks to Paul Clarke

After a number of weather and opposition induced false starts, the Senior Colts finally got 2026 underway with a pulsating, at times brutal, hard fought win against Stockport, 21-14, in NW League A.
Kicking off on the 1st team pitch, the Colts were on top territory and possession wise in the first quarter, finally making their strength tell through Tom Hazleton after some significant forward pressure. With Jamie Arista converting, the Colts went 7-0.
The Colts were driving into Stockport’s 22 when a tackle that reverberated around Paton Field left a Stockport player sadly concussed. The player is OK now, but safety was the first order and the game moved to the 3rd team pitch.
The pitch change re-invigorated Stockport and their forwards drove them back into the game scoring on the half time whistle. 7-7 all at the break.

Stockport started the second half strongly and the Colts defence held on their on the line for the first 10 minutes, repelling wave after wave of attacks with big hit tackles, ferocious defending, with ultimate discipline to not to concede a penalty or more importantly a try.
Caldy eventually held up Stockport on the line and the pressure rescinded. Caldy want on the attack down the blind side only for Stockport to make a magnificent interception and run into score under the posts. 7-14.
With injuries mounting, it was time for the lads to dig deep and show us what they had.
Our forwards stepped it up again and forced our way into the Stockport red zone. Stockport withheld but eventually the pressure mounted and Fin McDonnell scored down the blind side from quick ruck ball. Jamie Arista converted again with a difficult kick 14-14.

Down to the final 5. A Stockport scrum on their 10 metre went against the head after a good nudge from Caldy’s pack…. The ball moved wide with speed into the hands of emergency winger, Theo Hendry, who rounded his man, sprinted to the 22, grubber kicked past the cover and then dotted down over the line. It was a worldly from our second row !
With the conversion good again, the lads held out in a tense last 5 minutes to secure an important win. All credit to Stockport who battled hard for 70 minutes and never gave an inch.

The Colts now travel to Chester, perennial rivals, for one of the biggest matches of the season to decide the destination of the League title.

Halbro NW Junior Colts League A – Sunday 18th January 2026
Caldy u17s ……………………. 49 pts

Kirkby Lonsdale u17s ……. 10 pts
Match report thanks to Tony Formela

Weather conditions were extremely poor for this league mid season encounter with persistent rain and low temperature.
Only previous encounter was a 7-7 draw two seasons previous.
Kirkby Lonsdale came out strong with some good forward control and took the lead with an early try. However Caldy settled and took the game to a forward dominated contest. Caldy scored three successive try’s to a late score from Kirkby Lonsdale and led 15-10 at the interval.
From the start of the second half Caldy dominated the pack and played forward progressive rugby, working up the pitch to then allow the backs some attacking space and stretch the Kirkby Lonsdale resolve which resulted in 6 second half try’s and a fairly resounding result.
A good performance with try’s scored across the field from different positions which moved Caldy to third in the league, three points behind local rivals Wirral.
Tries scored by Zach Stanley x 2, James Bafico-Cadle, Mayson Jones x 2, Bobby Banks x 2, Kit Austin & Jake Batty

It is with deep regret that we have to report the passing of
Olly Farrall and Kenny Roberts last weekend.

Olly Farrall

Olly captained the Old Caldeians 1st xv in 1963-4.
He was also the club Fixture Secretary from the late 1950’s until the 1970’s, when the Fixture Secretary was one of the most important roles in the club, maintaining and improving the fixtures which were planned up to 5 years in advance. He was instrumental in improving the fixture list – getting fixtures in the Midlands, clubs like Stoke, Stafford, Derby, Newbold on Avon, Burton, Wolverhampton and many more.

Olly also organised tours to Ireland, Scotland and Wales where the club met and made many new friends. He was also involved with the Merseyside Sevens teams and getting 32 teams to come every season.  Olly was well known by all the local teams in Cheshire, Lancashire and even into the Midlands in his role as Old Caldeians and Caldy RFC Fixture Secretary.

He continued to play for the lower teams well into his 30’s joining the vet’s side. He continued to support the club into his 80’s until his health prevented him to come up. However he did see the club reach the Championship which would have made him very proud of what his club had achieved. He celebrated his 90th birthday earlier in the week.

Our condolences go to his wife Caroline and his daughter Liz and son Richard who also played for the club. We will advise members when we know details of his funeral.

Kenny Roberts

Kenny was a larger than life figure who played for the club in the late 1950’s and 60’s after doing his National Service in the RAF, initially at the West Kirby camp before going to Singapore.

Kenny played for Caldy until the late 60’s before he moved on to other local clubs, Old Birkonians and Hoylake. He returned to the club again in the 90’s when he became Caldy 2nd xv captain in 1992-3. After retiring he assisted Martin Poste in managing the kit and travel arrangement.

During his time, he took a course to become a water area technician but unfortunately he did not get full accreditation and remained a “trainee water area technician”.

Kenny was never “bland” and he was known to many in the local rugby clubs. He even made it into the New Zealand papers for an incident at Hoylake Rugby Club when he was arrested on the pitch at half time for nonpayment of maintenance and spent the weekend in Hoylake police station in his kit.

Kenny wore his heart on his sleeve and his commitment to Caldy RFC was fearless if at times a little controversial. He will certainly be missed at the club. He had been ill for some time and unable to get to the club however he followed the games on WhatsApp !

Our condolences go to his families and children, his funeral will be at Landican and back to the club . We will advise the date and time when confirmed.
