That Friday Feeling – 16/10/26

A packed Saturday of rugby at Paton Field will see Caldy’s 2nd xv take on an always strong Sedgley Park 2nd xv at 12.15 followed by round 5 of the Elior Champ with the Ravers taking on Ampthill. The 3rd xv is away against New Brighton’s 2nd xv with a 3 pm kick off.

Caldy v Ampthill

If last season’s fixture is a guide Caldy 1st xv’s match up with Ampthill is likely to be a robust affair, the Ravers winning 34 – 29 in a close rumbustious encounter. However, if the Ravers are to prevail tomorrow, they will need to start the game better than they have so far this season. In each game the Ravers failed to score first and played catch up in the second half to try and rescue the position. That they nearly did so in each of their four games shows both character and ability. They will need every bit of both against Ampthill

Comparing 5th placed Ampthill’s 26/27 playing record against 10th placed Caldy is illuminating and demonstrates just how narrow the margin is between winning and losing.

Ampthill had narrow wins against Richmond, Nottingham and Hartpury before last week going down heavily at home to Doncaster. Caldy have been pipped at home by both Hartpury and Chinnor and recorded a narrow win away at Blackheath before succumbing to Rotherham away last Friday. The net outcome is only 2-points difference deficit between the sides, but Ampthill have 12 league points from their 3 wins whilst the Ravers are languishing on 6 league points from just 1 win.

Head Coach Matt Cairns has selected the following squad for tomorrow’s Elior Champ fixture against Ampthill which kicks off at 3 pm with gates open from 11.30 am.

If Caldy are to get back to winning ways they will need every ounce of passion and appropriate vociferous support that the Wirral public can muster. The forecast is for a perfect day for rugby, get down to Paton Field and cheer on the Ravers!
