That Friday Feeling – 02/10/26

According to the Met Office the weather at Paton Field at 1 pm on Saturday 2nd October will be fine, dry and calm with the sun making a full appearance just after 1 pm. Perfect Autumn conditions for glamorous ladies to showcase their fashion choices as they enjoy the hospitality, prosecco and the attention that Caldy’s Ladies Day will inevitably bring. This benign weather forecast will also please those coming to Paton Field to watch some cracking rugby.

Round 3 of Elior Champ rugby sees the Ravers kick off at 1 pm against old rivals Chinnor in what will be a monster of a game followed at 3 pm by Caldy’s 3rd xv taking on Port Sunlight’s 1st xv  in a local derby fixture and their first league outing of the season.

Match Preview Ravers v Chinnor

The Ravers’ last-minute victory 24-28 at Blackheath was a suitable reward for a long and uncomfortable Friday afternoon and rush hour journey to south London. Tomorrow the boot is somewhat on the other foot as old rivals Chinnor have a 4 ½ – 5hr hour journey up from Thame in Oxfordshire for the early 1pm kick off.

However, Caldy’s Head Coach Matt Cairns doesn’t expect the journey to be an issue for Nick Easter’s side. “I expect that Chinnor will come up today, stay over tonight and be rested, refreshed and ready come Saturday lunchtime. Since coming into the Champ they have quickly established themselves as a top 6 side. Up front their juggernaut of a pack is powerful and extremely proficient with a tremendous set piece game. As they showed last week with eight tries in their win against last season’s second placed Bedford, their attacking game isn’t too shabby either.”

The Ravers’ last encounter with Chinnor was in the final September preseason friendly in Thame which the home side won 53-36. Last season’s Champ game at Paton Field saw the Ravers go down 28-36 with a blistering start by Chinnor giving them a 7-point lead which they never relinquished.

This season Caldy have conceded first in both of their opening Champ games against Hartpury and Blackheath. They will need to start better against Chinnor if they are to avoid chasing the game.

“We have trained well this week and have put particular focus on the technical aspects. We will need to be at the top of our game against a very good and ruthless Chinnor squad,” said Cairns.

Cairns has picked the following squad for the Ravers clash with Nick Easter’s Chinnor:

The match kicks off at 1 pm and gates will be open from 10 am.

Coach Andrew Soutar’s Running the Cardiff Half!

I’m running the Cardiff Half Marathon this Sunday as part of the SuperHalves series across Europe! This will be my 2nd Super Half (my first was Valencia, with Lisbon, Prague, Berlin, and Copenhagen still to come).

It’s all in preparation for the Tokyo Marathon in March 2027—my 6th and final World Marathon Major, having already completed London, Berlin, Chicago, New York, and Boston.

A last-minute decision means I’m running Cardiff for charity! I’ve chosen to support the NSPCC, an amazing charity leading the fight against child abuse across Wales, the rest of the UK, and the Channel Islands. They help children who have suffered abuse rebuild their lives, protect those at risk, and work tirelessly on prevention.

If you’re able to support this fantastic cause, any donation would be hugely appreciated:
