![]() Champ Rugby round 21 – Saturday 28th March 2026 Match report – John Lyon Caldy ………………………… 19 pts Tries: Robinson 10, Hearn 54, Gallagher 76 Conversions: K Wilkinson 55, 76 Ealing Trailfinders ……… 21 pts Tries: Reid 40, Bridge 41, Dykes 50 Conversions: Scannell 40, 41, 50 It was nearly déjà vu at Paton Field as the Ravers pushed unbeaten Ealing all the way but just failed to repeat their January 2023 heroics, losing out in the tightest of games.Ealing director of rugby, Ben Ward acknowledged the ferocity, physicality and closeness of the game. “This game could have gone either way,” he said. “Paton Field is a very tough place to come. I thought we dominated most of the first half and had the better chances, but Caldy were on top in the second 40. We could have had no complaints if they had snatched it at the end.” The first 10 minutes were keenly fought and despite playing into a strong and blustery wind the home side were first onto the score board through powerful wing Will Robinson who crossed in the corner for an unconverted score. Conditions were perfect for running rugby and Ealing’s intentions were clear. They launched wave after wave of attacks through forwards and backs against a resolute and largely impenetrable Caldy defence with Caldy’s tackle machine Dan Owen leading the resistance. ![]() Ealing could have kicked some straightforward penalties but opted to push for the seven pointers. Caldy’s stonewall defence and Ealing’s failure to register any scores from constant pressure led to frustration. As Ealing’s play became ever more ragged it looked likely that Caldy would finish the half five points to the good. However, just before the break Jordy Reid crossed for the visitors providing Rory Scannell with a simple conversion to snatch a narrow 5-7 lead. Two further converted scores within 10 minutes of the restart by David Bridge and Michael Dykes built a 5-21 cushion for Ealing who may then have expected to stretch their lead. It didn’t work out that way as the remaining 30 minutes belonged to the Ravers. Kieran Wilkinson kept Caldy in the right areas and continuously turned the screw on the league leaders. Converted scores by Caldy hooker Ollie Hearn and his replacement Matt Gallagher brought the home side within two points of another memorable victory over Ealing but with two men in the sinbin somehow the relieved visitors hung on for the win. “That was the best we have played this season,” said Caldy coach Matt Cairns. “Our defence, tactics and attack matched up to Ealing and showed the progress we are making.” ![]() ![]() All images thanks to Kieran Free Caldy : Hyde, Robinson, C Wilkinson, Barlow (Barker 73), Tudor, K Wilkinson, Akehurst (Thomas 57), Weatherby (Spencer 57), Hearn (Gallagher 57), Rushton (Sproston 57), Loboda (Olyott 59), Hodkinson, Ridgway (Davies 64), Owen, Dickinson (c), Mitchell. But Caldy adapted superbly, controlling territory, keeping the tempo high, and taking their chances with real authority. To Sefton’s credit, they battled right through to the final whistle and never let the intensity drop, but the 3’s were simply too strong across the park—sharp in attack, physical in contact, and organised in defence. Most importantly, it was fantastic to see the 3’s back in action at home, playing with confidence and enjoying their rugby. A great afternoon at Paton Field and a well‑earned win for the lads. Well played, boys. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Images & report thanks to Barry MacDonald – Sunday 29th March – Halbro NW Senior Colts League A Wilmslow u18s …………… 57 pts Caldy u18s …………………… 7 pts The Senior Colts travelled to League winners Wilmslow for their last league game of the campaign and the end of 13 years of tight battles with Wilmslow. Sadly, the weather didn’t read the script and with a rather unseasonable start to British Summer time, the lads took to the pitch in torrential rain and a good old fashioned mud bath of a pitch. Wilmslow adapted incredibly well to the conditions and sadly we didn’t, with the match ending in the Colts’ heaviest defeat of the season and one quite out of character. Wilmslow used their kick chase to great effect with a number of carbon copy tries and ran out deserved winners. A match to forget, but plenty of learnings for us as we prepare for our last game of the season in the Cheshire Cup Final against old rivals Chester on April 19th. ![]() Image & report thanks to Paul Clark – Rugby coming up Saturday 4th April – Champ Rugby round 22 Coventry v Caldy kick off 3.00 pm at Butts Park Arena ![]() Please join us on our Caldy Ravers supporters coach to Coventry – 55 seats available – depart 8.00am from Paton Field – arrive 1.00pm at Butts Park Arena Travel £20 per seat on the coach + match entry £20 adult / £17 concession / £6 under 16 Don’t miss out on this special trip !
