Champ Rugby round 16 – Saturday 7th February 2026

Conversions: Mausia 44, Thompson 76

Caldy ….……………..… 26 pts

Caldy’s Director of Rugby Gareth Davies was pleased to record the bonus point win on the road against Cambridge whilst also recognizing that it was a scrappy performance. “The perception that we were big favourites to win well down in Cambridge was wide of the mark. On and off we have been playing them for the last 9 years and I cannot remember an easy game against them. Every game in the Champ is difficult and hard fought especially away fixtures. Cambridge made it as hard for us as we expected them to.”

Soft underfoot conditions and a stiff breeze combined to make this one for the purists as the packs and the kickers slugged it out for a turgid opening 20 minutes.  Charlie Hyde continued his good form with a kick on the run up the touchline, putting Will Robinson in for the first score. Kieran Wilkinson converted before scoring the best individual try of the game scything through the midfield to double Caldy’s lead to 14-0.

The Ravers probably should have put the game beyond doubt in this first 40 minutes but lapses in concentration let the ‘Blood and Sand’ back into to it and they scored through a driving maul just before the break.

The 2nd half was more even as the home side, sensing the possibility of an elusive first win in the Champ, upped their tempo. When Cambridge’s best player, scrum half Ruaridh Dawson, skipped over for their second score it was definitely game on. Further Caldy scores by the excellent Connor Wilkinson and replacement hooker Matt Gallagher should have given the Ravers breathing space at 12-26 but Cambridge fought back. Two more tries in the last 10 minutes brought the score to 24-26 and had the Ravers hanging on for the win. Although this was a less than sparkling 80 minutes from Caldy there were some meritorious individual performances with flanker Jordan Jones, centre Connor Wilkinson and the six members of the front row club all putting in the necessary graft to see Caldy home.

Despite a somewhat lackluster team performance Davies was upbeat about the result. “Five more league points from another win gives us momentum going into our next home game at Paton Field against Cornish Pirates. We need another big and noisy home crowd to drive us forward against one of the Champ’s full-time pro sides. The crowd at our last home game against Nottingham was the loudest I can ever remember and it made a huge difference to our performance. This Saturday we need bigger and louder against the Pirates”

Caldy v Cornish Pirates is a 2 o’clock kick off at Paton Field this Saturday, 14th February 2026. Gates open at 11 am.
