The Rav3rs can be proud of much of the work done against a highly motivated and eager Parkonians first team side, who stand top of the table and unbeaten so far after 9 bonus point wins.
Caldy suffered from the absence of a recognised hooker and found it hard to set any platform, suffering particularly badly at the line-out. Parkonians exploited this, kicking in behind time and again, with the expectation that the ball would be recovered.

Credit to the team that this improved as the game went on and Rob Smith made a big impact when he joined the fray, steadying the scrum and enabling us to win some good quality ball ( without succumbing to cramp ! ).
The story of the game was that we conceded 3 tries in the first half, before Tom “Shanners” Shanahan picked a lovely hard line off Felix Clarke, taking a short ball and running home from 20m. Felix added the extras.
Parkonians kicked a penalty as half time arrived: 25 points to 7.

The second half saw an early moment of controversy which went in our favour. Defending under the posts, the forwards secured difficult possession and Adam Horrocks found Felix Clarke who made a clever break out of the 22. With defenders closing, he chipped the ball forward for debutant Alan Morris to run onto. Cover, in the remarkable shape of Parkonians left wing, “Azzer”, a man with the build of a traditional prop and the acceleration and speed of an Olympic sprinter, fluffed his clearance and hacked the ball out backwards to his own 22m line.
A Parkonian took position somewhere near the mark and watched as Alan recovered the ball, keeping it “live”, took a quick throw and on receiving the return pass dotted down for Caldy’s second. There were not “2 players from each team”, the lineout had therefore not been formed, so the referee rightly gave the try.
Cue consternation – and a degree of complaint from the hosts.

There then ensued a fairly confused and chaotic period, in which the heroes of the Rav3rs collectively lost their way. When it finished, the scoreline had gone out to 47:12. Most of the points followed a similar pattern and credit is due to Parkonians for some accurate touch kicking and for capitalising on Caldy errors.
Happily, that was not the end of it, as Leo Grist-Corf had a spectacular score to add.

A period of sustained pressure to which all contributed, saw Caldy punch and jab their way up the middle, breaking tackles and supporting on the relevant shoulders. The ball was re-cycled, Adam Horrocks, busy and accurate as ever, fed Felix who chipped in behind. Leo leapt salmon-like to reach the ball first, knocking it upwards and forwards, juggling briefly before catching the ball and reaching over the line to score. Felix again added the extras.
A further couple of moments of confusion allowed Parkonians to run in 2 more scores in their favourite corner and the final whistle went.

Great credit to the lads for their resilience and team work, with especial mention to Craig Smithson, who led by example all afternoon. Matty Mountney put in a terrific shift, fighting through a shoulder injury and strong contributions were made by the likes of Sangare, Evans, indeed all the lads, led so well by Shanners !

No Rav3rs game this coming weekend, as Chester 3s have folded, Capenhurst away looms large on 24th January.
