Champ Rugby round 4 – Saturday 25th October 2025

Caldy …………… 41 pts
Tries: Hearn 6, 16; Ene 20, Kilcourse 25, 45; Robinson 32, Logan 73
Conversions: K Wilkinson 17, 21, 46

Cambridge ……. 24 pts
Tries: Nearchou 29, 39; Eckersley 43, Vereimi 51
Conversions: Mausia 29, Caven 40

For differing reasons, this early season game had a ‘really need to win complexion’ for both sides. Caldy were bidding to go four from four to record their best ever winning sequence in the Champ and the visitors were looking to get their first win of the season.

For the first 30 minutes there was little doubt that come 5 o’clock the Ravers would be four from four, the only uncertainty was the size of the score. A totally dominant Caldy, playing against the wind bullied the visitors in the scrums, the mauls and at the break down to lead 24 – 0. Hooker Ollie Hearn had picked up the first couple of scores from driving mauls, with one converted by Kieran Wilkinson before the Ravers decided to share the action with the backs. First winger Obi Ene got on the end of a well-executed move to score out wide and minutes later the outstanding Matt Kilcourse crashed over for the bonus point try after Ollie Hearn switched the play to bamboozle the Cambridge defence.

The rampant Ravers looked to be unstoppable pulverising Cambridge in the scrums and driving mauls twenty metres or more. The lack of any tension amongst a packed bank of supporters was indicative of Caldy’s control until a brace of converted scores by replacement prop Zachery Nearchou, either side of Caldy’s fifth try by winger Will Robinson, brought the visitors right back into the match.

Nearchou’s first try came from his powerful surge which was only stopped a couple of metres short of the line. However, the burly prop had the presence of mind to reach back over his head to touchdown. His second, right on the stroke of half time was a carbon copy of his first but without the balletic reach back. Conversions by Otumaka Mausia and Elias Caven brought the Blood & Sand to within fifteen points at 29 – 14 down at the break and the Caldy supporters started to twitch.

Despite playing against the elements, it was the visitors that scored first in the second period through back row Dan Eckersley after some sloppy play by the Ravers had turned over possession. 29 – 19 and the home crowd’s nerves were starting to jangle until Kilcourse replied with his second score, finishing a pre-planned move under the posts to give Wilkinson the easiest of conversions. Two further tries by Cambridge’s Aloisio Vereimi and Caldy’s Reuben Logan ended the scoring at 41 – 24 leaving the Ravers with four bonus point wins in a row to cement second position in the table.

On Friday the Ravers will travel the 380 miles to Penzance to take on a resurgent Cornish Pirates at the Mennaye Field on Saturday 1st November. It is not surprising that the Ravers have never won in Penzance, despite an overnight stop on Bodmin Moor the longest away coach trip in English rugby saps the energy like no other. Difficult preparation ahead of taking on one of the Champ’s big beasts. Last Saturday the Pirates crushed London Scottish at the Richmond Athletic Ground. The Ravers will need to achieve another new first if they are to extend their winning sequence.

The next 1st xv action at Paton Field will be on Saturday 8th November when the Worcester Warriors come to the Wirral.
