Caldy – That Friday Feeling 31st Oct ’25

After starting the Champ campaign with four successive bonus point wins the Ravers have momentum and their supporters are somewhat giddy with excitement. Not surprisingly Caldy’s taciturn Director of Rugby Gareth Davies is somewhat more balanced in his assessment. “We were given a favourable opening sequence of games, with three at home and I am delighted that we have taken full advantage of the opportunity it gave us. However, we haven’t played as well as results suggest and it is about to get an awful lot tougher. We now have a run of games leading up to Christmas against 5 of the sides that will definitely be competing for the top six. We are at a very obvious disadvantage against the fully professional sides like Cornish Pirates and we need to try and pick up points where we can.”

This very tough run of fixtures starts this weekend in the round 5 match at the Mennaye Field against Cornish Pirates. The 750-mile round trip has never ended well for Caldy who have never won at the Mennaye Field. This weekend’s task will not have been helped by the five enforced changes to the match day squad as Davies explained. “We have a few lads unavailable this Saturday, but it does provide an opportunity for us to freshen things up. Over the season we expect to utilise 35 to 40 different players in the 1st xv match day squad. The 1st xv and 2nd xv squads train together as one senior group. Transitioning players through our 2nd xv into our 1st xv is fundamental to our rugby model”

Caldy’s first ever visit to the Mennaye Field was in late March 2007 when as Champions of North 1 they took on the now defunct Mounts Bay side in the semi final of the Intermediate cup. Caldy’s then player-coach Matt Holt put together a montage of video clips to inspire the squad to reach the final at Twickenham. This stirring video became a Ravers classic but had little impact on the squad’s match day performance as they succumbed to a terrific Mounts Bay side 33-10. Mounts Bay went on to win the final at Twickenham. Picking out familiar faces in the crowd and on the pitch in this video is a nostalgic delight.
