Caldy – That Friday Feeling – 14th February ’25
Caldy’s Head Coach Matt Cairns was in a somewhat subdued mood this morning. But as he explained his flat demeanor was unrelated to Caldy’s difficult last 40 minutes away the previous week against Newcastle Falcons. “For the last 30 years I have received a valentine’s card from the same secret admirer and to be honest I was pretty upset not to get one this year. First my great aunty Betty passes away and now this……..”
However, on the rugby front Cairns was more upbeat. “We had a good first half against Falcons and with a better bounce of the ball we could have been leading at half time. We took a very young squad to the Northeast and when we rotated players the second 40 minutes was more difficult for us. The experience was invaluable for these young players and despite the harshness of the final score line it will stand us in good stead.”
This week Cairns has introduced another exciting young prospect into the mix with 18-year-old winger Lucas Wiggins making his debut for Caldy’s 1st xv. “Lucas is one of a number of exciting young players who are coming through the age groups. Last week he scored three tries against Preston Grasshoppers. These young players represent Caldy’s future.”
Lucas, whose father Richard Wiggins was also a Caldy 1st xv winger, probably has a somewhat sterner debut test than his father enjoyed. Tomorrow Wiggins the younger is up against powerful former England international Semesa Rokoduguni !
Caldy’s Matt Cairns has selected the following squad for Saturday’s Premiership Rugby Cup away fixture at Castle Park against Doncaster Knights which kicks off at 2.30 pm.
