1st xv result – Newcastle Falcons 73 – 12 Caldy
Premiership Rugby Cup
Match report – John Mallon, Wirral Globe

Newcastle scored 11 tries and brushed a young and experimental Caldy team aside as they qualified for the quarter finals of the Premiership Rugby Cup with Caldy unable to go through to the next round.

Caldy caught their hosts off guard after five minutes when the ball got to Will Robinson and the Scotland under 20 international went over to continue his impressive recent form. The Caldy try seemed to inspire the home side who scored three quick tries to take the game away from their opponents in the opening 20 minutes. However, fans of both sides agreed that the part-time Caldy played exceptionally well against their professional opposition.

Newcastle secured the bonus point before the break. They had a great start to the second half scoring two quick tries but Caldy kept the pressure on and after another brace of tries youngster Jack Ellam scored his first try for the first XV. A further four tries from the Falcons saw a spectacular score at the end of the match. But that does not take away from the young Caldy team’s effort and as the Championship season moves into March they will be able to progress from this experience.

The Caldy second XV secured an impressive win at Preston Grasshoppers to win their 109th game in a row a run that stretches back to April 2019.

The Caldy 3rd XV, currently in the third tier of the Halbro League, are currently in second place. In their first season they play top of the league Ellesmere Port at Paton Field on Saturday and a victory could see them in with a real chance of promotion.

Caldy’s final Premiership Rugby Cup game is next Saturday against Doncaster Knights away before a break until March.
