Premiership Rugby Cup Match report – Luke Jarmyn, The Rugby Paper Caldy ………………14pts Tries: Gallagher 47, 55 Conversions: Barker 48, 56 Sale Sharks ………………..28pts Tries: Wills 11, 67; Davies 38, Kelly 60 Conversions: Curtis 12, 39, 61, 68 England U20 flyer Alex Wills got on the end of a crossfield chip to score his second try and secure Sale a crucial win in a feisty Cheshire derby.Sale battled back in the final quarter against a spirited Caldy outfit to score twice in a seven-minute purple patch and keep the pressure on Pool A leaders Newcastle. While it’s a perfect start to the second group of Premiership Cup fixtures for Sharks, Caldy remain unable to break their cup duck. Sale winger Wills said: “It’s great to get the win, its always a hard away day coming to Caldy and we had a very windy pitch to deal with. We gave a good display of ourselves, maybe we didn’t play as we wanted throughout but to get the win and score two tries is fantastic.” Sale were clinical early on, nicking Caldy’s first two lineouts and pinning the home side deep in their own half. Despite having a clear advantage, Sale’s ill-discipline proved costly until a turnover after a scrum led to debutant Ollie Davies breaking down the right and providing an inside pass for Wills to sidestep two defenders and open the scoring on the 11th minute.Caldy spent nearly 15 minutes deep in Sale territory, but even with the visitors giving away numerous penalties the Wirral side couldn’t execute and the Sharks punished Caldy’s white-line fever just before the break. From a lineout 10 metres out Sale’s forwards pushed Ravers back before whipping the ball right and Davies left Jacob Mitchell tasting mud as he skirted the Caldy flyer to score his first try in Sale colours right of the posts. Caldy fought back after half-time and produced a number of high kicks to put Sale on the back foot before hooker Matt Gallagher splintered off a driving maul to dot down. Ravers produced some riveting passes before full-back Matt Kilcourse found Gallagher on the right, who dashed in to level the game.Sale’s subs revitalised the visitors, and from a scrum in Caldy’s 22 replacement Seb Kelly dived over the try-line on the hour-mark. Davies’ chip to Wills secured Sale’s try bonus-point.Caldy coach Matt Cairns said: “We’re proud of our performance. We did well, pulled it back to 14-all in the second-half but Sale’s X-factor showed.” ![]() ![]() ![]() Images – Barry Macdonald Caldy : Kilcourse 6, Royle 7, Wilkinson 6, Barlow 6, Mitchell 6 (Hyde 60, 5), Barker 7 (Rogers 65, 5), Wynn 7 (Tansey 42, 6); Weatherby 8 (M Rabbette 70, 5), Gallagher 8 (Hearn 58, 5), Rushton 6 (Higginson 58, 6), Stevenson 6, Sanders 6, Olyott 7 (Butler 76, 5), Parry 6 (Ridgway 45, 5), JJ Dickinson (c) 8 Sale Sharks : Davies 9 (Bradshaw 76, 5), Ene 6, J Bedlow 7, S Bedlow 7 (Wilson 76, 5), Wills 9, Curtis (c) 7, N Thomas 6 (Warr 56, 5): McIntyre 6 (Onasanya 58, 5), McElroy 7 (Thompson 61, 5), Bridges 7 (Furtado-Mills 76, 5), Bamber 5 (Groves 23, 5), Hill 7, Dugdale 7, Woodman 6, Birch 6 (Kelly 56, 7) Referee: Jonathan Cook Attendance: 1,550 Rugby Paper Star Player: Alex Wills – Sale 3rd xv result NOWIRUL The Bay Travel Division 3 West Wallasey 15 – 29 Caldy Match report – Steve Bishop The Rav3rs travelled the short distance to Cross Lane on Saturday to face a solid and determined Wallasey side sitting just below us in third place in the league table. A big pack and an intelligent 9 and 10 pairing was always going to be a test. The extremely muddy pitch also proving a big leveller. The game kicked off in frantic fashion but the quality of Dan Rabett pulling the strings meant it wasn’t long before the Wallasey line was breached. Lucas Wiggins went down the right corner and drew his man, putting Connor Lloyd-Jones free. He kicked through, outpaced the wing. He clearly touched the ball down and then slid into the flag a good bit after, but the Ref saw different from a distance away and chalked that one off. It still wasn’t long though before the line was breached again. Lucas spotting a gap and running in from the 22 to open the scoring. Dan taking the 2 points. Wallasey fought their way down to the Caldy end, and after some stern defence from the Rav3rs, decided to take 3 and expect the ball back from the KO. That proved to be a mistake as the Rev3rs once again forced Wallasey back then hit with two quick fire tries. One in the corner for Adam Horrocks and a second almost under the sticks for Lucas Wiggins. One of them kicked by Dan and it’s 3 -19 at half time. The second half was a bit of a muddle. Both sides making a lot of errors. Both sides giving away a lot of penalties but in the main, it was Wallasey who forced the Rav3rs back. After 10 minutes of pressure, from a line out and driving maul the Wallasey back row split off and drove for the line. They were tackled and stopped but to the dismay of the Rav3ers the merry whistle blower decided that was dropping the main maul. From the next line out, Wallasey drove over and then added the 2 points. Pretty quickly Wallasey were back in the same corner and once again from a line out, recycled well and went in the corner. The extras this time missed. 15 – 19. Then followed the highlight of the game. The Wallasey second rower tried to go around the outside of the on-rushing defence, but then he met Sam Roberts. Sam hit the attacker with all his being. This was the epitome of “staying hit”. I was standing 15m away and it hurt me ! Caldy pushed their way forward for the last quarter and re-asserted themselves. Wiggy once again found a gap and went under the posts for his hat-trick. Dan took the 2 points. Then it was straight back up the field as the game closed and after countless episodes of Wallasey going off their feet, the Ref saw fit to let us have a decision. Dan put over the 3 points and the Rav3ers walked away with a 15 – 29 win. Weekend off next week for the lads, then we’re at home on the 15th Feb for a table topping clash with Ellesmere Port. COYR.
