Today is the last chance to file your income tax return without incurring a late submission penalty. For those who have filed on time, well done, reward yourself with a great day of rugby at Paton Field on Saturday where the Ravers entertain the mighty Sale Sharks in rugby’s Premiership Cup.

For those who may not make today’s deadline, well why not cast off your worries with a wonderful day out at Paton Field. Watch the Ravers take on Sale Sharks and then staying to enjoy the 6 nations clash between Ireland and England in the clubhouse and in the marque is just too good a rugby day to miss.

One person who will certainly be in attendance is Caldy RFC’s President and shark aficionado Graham Armitage. Graham’s successful debut in Caldy RFC’s 2023 two-day shark fishing competition 25 miles off Falmouth, gave him the appetite for testing himself against these big predators. Tomorrow his team will be up against some very big sharks indeed. He relishes the prospect.

“When I looked at the BBC website this morning to check on Saturday’s rugby union fixtures it reminded me just how far we have come. There, listed directly underneath the 6 Nations – Ireland v England (kick off 16.45) was Premiership Cup – Caldy v Sale (kick off 14.00). Twenty or so years ago Caldy v Egremont never got such prominence. We must never forget our journey, it is a truly remarkable story and makes me hugely proud of all the effort from so many volunteers, sponsors, coaches and players to get us to this point.

Although the intervention of the Premiership Cup competition stalls our recent momentum in the Championship it does also have a very big upside. To host Sale Sharks and their supporters as our opponents at Paton Field on Saturday is a high point in the season. It not only gives a wonderful opportunity for the Wirral public to watch their local team pit themselves against a Premiership side, but it also provides a benchmark for the Caldy players to measure themselves against elite full-time professional players. Our lads know the size of the task but that is a challenge every one of them relishes. For some of the younger players in the matchday squad this will be the stiffest challenge they will have faced but I am sure they are up for it and will enjoy the experience.”

Saturday’s weather is forecast to be dry and sunny with a moderate breeze, just perfect for rugby at Paton Field and Armitage is hopeful that the Wirral public will get behind the Ravers in force. “The impact of the support from the bank is massive for the team and we will need it to be as loud and raucous as it can be tomorrow. A packed JJ’s Bank has always made a difference in big games, and it can make an enormous difference tomorrow.”

Caldy’s line up for the fixture is very similar to the squad which recorded a fine win on the road at Cambridge last week with the exception that winger Will Robinson, who scored the crucial length of the field try was a late withdrawal, being replaced in the starting line up by Jacob Mitchell. Scrum half Jacob Tansey comes onto the bench for Joe Murray.

The gates will be open from 11 am and after the big match England’s 6 Nations clash against Ireland will be shown both in the club house and on a big screen in the marque. It promises to be a truly belting day of rugby at Paton Field !

Caldy’s Matt Cairns has selected the following squad for tomorrow’s Premiership Cup fixture against Sale Sharks which kicks off at 2.00 pm.
