Caldy – That Friday Feeling 17th January ’25

Tomorrow Caldy’s three senior sides all have their first action of the New Year at Paton Field, with the 1st xv at home against 4th placed Nottingham in the Championship, the 2nd xv entertaining Rossendale in the Halbro Premier League and the 3rd xv matched up against local rivals Oldershaw in Halbro’s 3rd division west. All games will kick off at 2 pm.

The weather forecast is for chilly but bright and benign conditions which should provide perfect conditions for both playing and watching top class rugby at Paton Field.

The improvement in the weather will be a relief to the indomitable volunteers from Caldy’s Last of the Summer Wine Gang. Along with contractors from Jon Bagley’s Trustland Construction Ltd, the LOSW have recently been battling with collapsing land drains, sink holes and unrelenting flooding caused by the recent persistent torrential rain and the overflow from the National Trust’s holding pond on Thurstaston Hill. Thankfully this serious situation, which threatened the pitches, the roadways and the local environs, has been expertly remediated by Trustland and the LOSW in time for the visit of Nottingham. The Caldy Sports Field Trust has launched an appeal for funding to pay for this expensive but essential remediation effort.

Before

After

Caldy have yet to beat Nottingham at Paton Field and Saturday’s task is unlikely to be any easier than their previous attempts. Last time out the Archers toppled 2nd placed Coventry with a 41-26 bonus point win, scoring 6 tries in the process. The Ravers will need a huge performance from every player in the match day squad backed up by a noisy, enthusiastic, and hopefully large home support if they are to overcome one of the form sides in the Championship.

One Raver who always empties the tank and is sure to be a big presence for Caldy is 31-year-old home grown second row Tom Sanders who will be playing his 300th first team game on Saturday. Rising through Caldy’s mini, junior and youth teams to reach the 1st xv at the age of 18, ‘Crouchy’ is always one of the first names on the team sheet. Last time out at Paton Field, this rugby giant gave one of his very best performances in the win against London Scottish, earning a 9 out of 10 rating from The Rugby Paper. If every Raver follows Tom’s lead the Archers are sure to face a stern test at Paton Field.

Caldy RFC’s community credentials have come to the fore this week with the herculean endeavors of the LOSW gang alongside Jon Bagley’s Trustland Construction and Tom Sanders imposing landmark game. The Ravers deserve all the support they can get from the Wirral public on Saturday. Please come down to Paton Field and support Tom and all the other 60 or so Ravers who will be in action on Saturday.
