Basement battle sees Caldy take the honours Match report – John Lyon, The Rugby Paper Caldy………………………20pts Tries: Royle 3, Hearn 47, Penalty 56 Penalty: Barker 10 London Scottish……… 10pts Tries: Anderson 19, Zheng 14 The old adage that ‘it is darkest just before dawn’ certainly applied to hitherto winless Caldy who on the day of the winter solstice beat fellow strugglers London Scottish. Head coach Matt Cairns was full of praise for his squad. “We had a plan for London Scottish which the lads executed well. There were some top performances from the group. Up front Tristan Woodman and Tom Sanders were simply outstanding with Tom recording a scarcely believable eight turnovers in the game.” The Ravers came out of the blocks quickly. An attempted Scottish clearance was charged down giving Caldy winger Nick Royle a sniff. A 20m run with only the fullback and the right winger to beat was meat and drink for the still rapid 41-year-old. Royle’s try was supplemented by a Lewis Barker penalty to provide a useful eight-point lead on a day when squalls and gales were certain to limit scoring. Images – Barry Macdonald After this bright start Caldy handed the initiative to Scottish who controlled the next 15 minutes with commendable continuity but without really threatening the try line until a smart grubber kick gave fullback Cameron Anderson the score in the corner. Only three points in arrears at the break, after playing against a near gale force wind, favoured the visitors who could have expected to kick on in the second half, but it did not work out that way. Driven on by their excellent scrum-half Ollie Wynn, the home pack started to dominate. Time and again Wynn drove the ball down the tram lines pinning the visitors in the corner and presenting the rampaging home pack with a smorgasbord of opportunity which they gobbled up. A succession of penalties led to a drive over score for hooker Ollie Hearn and then a penalty try for the pack with Lewis Gjaltema and Zach Carr both yellow carded in a two minute spell. With 20 minutes to go and a 20-5 lead against a side reduced to 13 after a couple of yellow cards, should have seen Ravers comfortably home but the desperation of both sides led to a rumbustious final quarter. Three yellow cards against Caldy – to Callum Ridgway, Michael Barlow and Tom Burrow in a 10 minute spell from the 68th, a 70th minute try by London Scottish wing Roma Zheng, handbags, penalties galore and huge effort from both sides made for a nervy but exciting finale. The game was characterised by the Rav3rs intensity and physicality in contact, in both attack and defence. Forward of the match was Harry Wilson, a tackling machine in defence, superb in the scrum and a constant threat with ball in hand. Back of the match is awarded to Luke Denn. He showed composure under high balls in gail force winds, excellent footwork and gas to beat defenders and great hands to ensure we attacked space whenever he had the ball. The Rav3rs return to action on Saturday 11th January, away at Wirral.” Caldy Senior Colts result – Heaton Moor 29 – 41 Caldy Another impressive performance gives Caldy u18s their third win of the season & lifts them up to 6th place in the league.
