The Ravers travel to Doncaster still looking for their first win of the season. Although…
Caldy – That Friday Feeling 22nd November ’24
The third round of the Premiership Cup has Championship heavyweights Doncaster Knights coming to Paton Field this Saturday in what is sure to be another tough fixture for the Ravers. Head Coach Matt Cairns has made a few changes in both the starting lineup and on the bench. In the backs players returning from injury have increased the options for Cairns with Sam Rogers starting at 10, Jacob Mitchell dropping in at 13 and Ben Jones and Will Robinson starting on the wings. “It is good to have both Sam and Will back to full fitness and both played last week in the 2nd xv’s match against Chester. Ben came on for 20 minutes against Sale Sharks and put in a good performance and Jacob Mitchell has done well in his recent performances, so they all deserve their spot.” Upfront Cairns isn’t quite as fortunate with experienced second rows Sam Dickinson, Callum Atkinson, Martin Gerrard, and Tom Sanders all on the treatment table. “Freddie Stevenson has been playing well in the 2nd xv and he has been pushing for a 1st xv position, he is partnered with Joe Sproston who is no stranger to the second row. Subject to RFU approval we hope that Freddie and Joe will be backed up by Jack Collister who will return to Paton Field for this important Premiership Cup match.” The inclusion of former Caldy player Jack Collister, one of the best ever Ravers, is a big but very welcome surprise addition to Saturday’s line up as Cairns explained. “Our injuries to our 2nd row players has left us short and DoR Gareth Davies spoke to Jack who subject to RFU approval is happy to help out with a guest appearance at Paton Field in the Premiership Cup.” Jack Collister came to Caldy from local club Hoylake in 2009 and broke into the first team in January 2010 in a National 2 North top of the table clash against Loughborough Students. For the next 11 seasons this hugely popular, talented, influential and massively committed player was an ever present for Caldy until July 2021 when he moved to Derbyshire with his young family. Jack is currently player coach at Long Eaton RFC. After last Friday’s thrilling 64-31 away win against Chester RFC, Caldy’s 2nd xv were due to be back in league action against Rochdale RFC tomorrow but unfortunately the game has now been cancelled. This high-quality match against Chester showcased some of the North West’s best young rugby talent with both sides playing an exciting fast-paced brand of rugby. Although Caldy eventually won through they were pushed all the way by a very committed and talented Chester side. A very decent crowd of around 350 witnessed some exhilarating rugby. With Joe Murray and Charlie Attis pulling the strings at half back Caldy racked up 10 tries with 7 converted by Attis. In a terrific all-round team performance, there were too many stand out performances to single any out. Caldy’s 2nd xv game against Rochdale tomorrow has unfortunately been cancelled so next game will be Saturday 7th December away v Preston Grasshoppers 2nd xv. The 3rd xv are also in league action with an away fixture against Crosby St Mary’s which kicks off at the Hightown club at 2.15 pm.
