Adam Radwan sidestepped two defenders and produced a touch of class to score Newcastle’s fifth try late on to gloss over an otherwise unconvincing win against a spirited Caldy side. Despite having a constant scoreboard margin, Steve Diamond’s side put in a patchy display over a Caldy outfit who showed it’s unlikely they will be sitting at the basement of the Championship for much longer. After seeing his Falcons go top of Pool A, Diamond told TRP: “It was a highly competitive game but there was a bit of a difference between the size and speed of ourselves and a Championship side. “None the less credit to Caldy, they’re very good defensively, it’s difficult to break them down and our error rate didn’t help. “We’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t in the cup. We picked a strong team, they were diligent, clearly did their homework on us which made us struggle at times, but ultimately we got what we came here for – a bonus point win, and that’s important.” A thick grey cloud greeted Newcastle, and matched their change strip in a first-ever trip to Paton Field’s idyllic setting. But the rain stayed away and with the wind at their back Falcons started strong, pinning Ravers deep in their own 22-metre area. From a lineout on the right Newcastle’s forwards pieced together several quick phases before fly-half Brett Con-non produced a pin-point cross-field kick, weighted perfectly for the chasing centre Oli Spencer to slide over on the fourth minute. Within a few minutes fullback Ethan Grayson and Nathan Greenwood linked up superbly, piercing through Caldy’s black-shirted line to free up Hugh O’Sullivan, the scrum-half skirting the last man to strut over by the right post. The Cheshire side held up the visitors with some dogged last ditch defence, but some sub-standard place kicking meant they couldn’t escape their own half. A quick Newcastle line-out from 10 metres on the stroke of half-time out saw skipper Bryan Byrne peel round the line and a silkily set up No.8 Fred Lockwood to muscle over and score on his 50th Falcons’ appearance. Caldy started the second-half much stronger, getting some territory and possession, running at Falcons and Ravers back-rowers in particular asked questions of the Premiership men. Eventually centre Mike Barlow broke through the grey-shirted line, allowing lock Sam Dickinson to march within a whisker of the try-line with the recycled ball allowing Oli Wynn to set up Dan Rabbette for the fly-half to dive over on the right. Newcastle’s territory dominance showed. A five-metre scrum, and a few quick crossfield passes set-up wing Nathan Greenwood to dash over on the left corner. Some eye-catching Ravers running rugby led to wing Mike Cartmill crashing through two Falcons defenders before scrum-half Wynn sprinted over. But Newcastle had the final say, easily making 40 metres from a line-out before Radwan skirted round to score on the right. Caldy coach Matt Cairns said: “It’s a tough scoreboard on us, the first-half was difficult but we defended really well. After the break we put a bit more pressure on Newcastle, scored two good tries and we’ll take those positives into next week.” Images – Barry Macdonald TEAMS CALDY: Hyde 5, Cartmill 8, Barlow 7 (Mitchell 62, 5), Wilkinson 6, Beer 5, Barker 5 (Rabbette 39, 9), Tansey 7 (Wynn 45, 8); Weatherby 7 (Aigbokhae 49, 6), Hearn 6 (Gallagher 49, 6), Higginson 7 (Sproston 49, 7), Sanders 6, S Dickinson 6 (Stevenson 59, 5), Olyott 7, Ridgway 8 (Parry 61, 5), JJ Dickinson (c) 8 NEWCASTLE: Grayson 5 (Radwan 52, 6.5), Hearle 6 (Metcalf 68, 5), Spencer 7, Hutchison 6, Greenwood 8, Connon 6, O’Sullivan 7 (Pepper 64, 5); McCallum 6 (Rewcastle 64, 5), Byrne (c) 7 (Fletcher 52, 5), de Bruin 6 (Hancock 64, 5), de Chaves 7, McDonald 6 (Kelly 64, 5.5), Scott 7 (Bainbridge 36-40), Leatherbarrow 5 (Bainbridge 64, 5.5), Lockwood 8 REFEREE: Mike Hudson ATTENDANCE: 1,370 The Rugby Paper – Star player – Daniel Rabbette, Caldy Sponsors Man of the Match – Mike Cartmill, Caldy Caldy 1st xv next game – AWAY at Salford Community Stadium Friday 8th November – Premiership Rugby Cup Sale Sharks v Caldy kicks off 7.45pm Caldy 2nd xv next game – HOME at Paton Field Saturday 9th November – Caldy v Fylde Hawks kicks off 2.00pm Caldy 3rd xv next game – AWAY at Whitby Sports & Social Club Saturday 9th November – Ellesmere Port v Caldy Rav3ers Caldy RFC presents “A Night with Rugby Legends” on Friday 22nd November All enquiries please contact Mary – details below |
