3rd xv result – Caldy 43 – 15 Wallasey |
Match report – Steve Bishop Rob Welsh and his experienced Wallasey side made the short trip from Cross Lane to Paton Field, to play the Rav3rs under the lights on Friday night. A bumper crowd came along to witness a well fought fixture. Wallasey having only lost to table topping Ellesmere Port so far. Caldy thirds is made up of a blend of current and former Colts, bolstered by a number of wiser, older heads, not ready or willing to hang up their boots – just yet. But still with lots to offer in helping guide the youngsters into adult rugby. The game started in frantic fashion. Opposite numbers keen to signal their intent. Half backs sussing out game plans. The game was 10 minutes when the referee first had to intervene. Will McCraig drove the ball towards the Caldy posts, the Rav3rs too slow to clear the ruck. No advantage gained and Wallasey took the 3 points with Danny Rich. Perhaps a sign that Wallasey, having thrown some considerable effort into breaking the gain line, thought visits into Caldy’s 22 may be limited. How right they were. The majority of the next 30 minutes were spent at the other end of the paddock. On 17 minutes and after several warnings, the referee awarded a penalty try and Wallasey went down to 14. On 25 minutes, Noah Griffiths charged in from a well worked catch and drive to extend the lead. Then Wallasey showed the resolve that’s earned them 5 wins. They dug in, saw out the sin bin and stood firm until just before half time, when an aimless pass landed kindly for Lucas Wiggins and he ran in unopposed from the 10m. Sooty took the 2 points. 19 – 3 to the Rav3rs at the break. The half time message was to be calm, to be confident, to play OUR game. It wasn’t long before that message paid dividends. Wallasey started to struggle to contain the speed round the corner. Sooty marshalling the back line. The spaces began to appear and in went Lucas Wiggins for his second try. The pressure continued and it wasn’t long before the Rav3rs were in again. Liam Devaney sniffing out a gap to score, the evergreen Sooty kicked the 2 points. Next in was Big Tony Hirons for his first senior score. Followed by Andy Ridgway and another 2 points from Sooty. 74 minutes gone and the Rav3rs appeared to be coasting. 43 – 3. Wallasey however don’t go out like that. They forced their way down the field, driven on by Johnny Francis and Dave Morgan at 9 and 10. They forced errors in the left corner and in went the energetic back row Andy Mason to tap down. 43 – 8. From the kick off Wallasey went straight back to the same corner and after Danny Rich made good ground from centre, the front row did the rest. 43-15 after Danny Rich put the extras over. That was the final score. Wallasey certainly came to play. They embodied the TREDS values and we look forward to the return trip. Well done the Rav3rs. With 13 players out through injury and unavailability, and 3 players from our under 16s stepping up to make their Colts’ debut, the squad of 17 knew they would all need to step up with grit and determination and they did that in spades !!! Chester backs showed their class with 2 well taken tries in the first half. Caldy’s forwards took the battle to Chester and ended the first half 14 – 5 down. Try – Cameron Harper In the second half, it was more of the same with Caldy forward pressure securing two more tries ( Luke MacDonald and a penalty try ) and Chester’s backs firing one try back.
