1st xv result – Caldy 21 – 26 Cambridge
This was an attritional game by two sides playing catch up after both suffered bruising defeats in the first round of the Championship.

Cambridge Head Coach Richie Williams acknowledged the tightness of the contest. “This is probably my fifth visit to Caldy and I am pleased to have eventually picked up a win. We needed it. Both sides played defensive rugby and Jared Cardew’s try on the stroke of half time just tipped it for us. In the last 10 minutes Caldy put real pace on the game and we were pleased to hold out for the victory”.

Caldy started brightly enough with an early Ollie Hearn try from a driven maul. Grimoldby quickly replied with a penalty which was countered by Caldy through a brace of place kicks by Tom Curtis. Twice Caldy centre Mike Cartmill made incisive breaks before being hauled down by the visitors. The early momentum was promising but flattered to deceive.

Soon Cambridge was dominating territory and possession, only mistakes by the visitors and Caldy’s excellent scramble defence kept the home side ahead 11-6.  Eventually the pressure told. Two quick tries fired the Blood and Sand in front. The first by the excellent Kayde Sylvester was swiftly followed by a second through flanker Cardew. A searing break by Ruaridh Dawson from the base of a scrum on the Caldy 10 metre line had caught the Ravers napping and the supporting Cardew was able to stroll over unopposed to provide the easiest of conversions for Grimoldby.

The visitors went into the sheds with a seven-point lead at 11-18.

Caldy came out with renewed purpose but despite going close on a couple of occasions it was agricultural rugby. Curtis closed the gap to 14-18 with another penalty but Caldy were still reliant on huff and puff rather than using their flair and ability. Another penalty from Grimoldby and a Benjamin Brownlee try from a driving maul gave the visitors a deserved 12-point cushion with only 15 minutes of a turgid contest to see out.

On 66 minutes the introduction of the Ravers’ Welsh ‘jack in the box’ Lewis Barker changed everything. For the last 10 minutes the home supporters enjoyed some up tempo free flowing rugby orchestrated by Barker. Ollie Wynn picked up his second try in as many games and at 21 – 26 Caldy were pushing for the win but were eventually beaten by the clock.

Caldy’s DOR Gareth Davies was succinct in his appraisal. “We are not at the standard we should be at. We must improve and quickly.”

Despite the disappointing reverse there were some brighter spots for Caldy. Up front tight head prop Monty Weatherby impressed in the loose and the introduction of Ollie Wynn, Lewis Barker and debutant Jordan Jones revved up the Ravers.

Next week the Ravers travel to newcomers Chinnor who have made an altogether impressive start to their life in the Championship.

The Rav3rs fell to a narrow one point defeat, against a well drilled and spirited Oxton Parkonians 1st xv. Well done to Oxton Parkonians fly half, who held his nerve to slot a penalty kick with the last play of the game from 35m out. Again, there were plenty of positives to take from the game. Returns to competitive rugby for Max Fletcher, Carl Southan and Connor Windell, as well as a hat-trick for our junior colts speedster Rob Waring and 80 mins of waddling by Liam Devaney.
