That Friday Feeling – 24th February 2023

There is no senior rugby at Paton Field this Saturday as the 1st xv have a free weekend before their ‘international fixture’ next week against Jersey and the 2nd xv’s league clash against Stockport has been rearranged as a double header winner takes all league fixture on 18th of March.

However, despite the absence of 1st & 2nd xv action there is still a big weekend of rugby at Caldy RFC this weekend. Tonight the clubhouse will be open from 7 pm as Caldy’s Will Robinson starts his 4th consecutive match for Scotland’s Under 20s against France Under 20s. The match will be shown in the clubhouse whilst outside a tag rugby tournament will delight those wishing to watch some live action.

Tomorrow the club house will be open from 2 pm to cover all the latest 6 Nations action.

With no senior games to preview it provides a moment to reflect on the tremendous achievement for Caldy RFC to reach and be competitive in the Championship. The plaudits of course rightly go to the 1st xv and their dedicated coaches but for all the column inches and air time celebrating this endeavour there is possibly an even greater but less heralded continuing success at Caldy RFC.

Caldy’s 2nd xv’s achievements are unlikely ever to be surpassed – other than by themselves:

As at 24 February 2023 a 61 game winning streak- and building
In the 22/23 season nine 2nd xv players have played Championship rugby
Caldy’s Will Robinson has started each of Scotland U20’s 6 nations’ fixtures
Cheshire Vase winners 38-0 against Chester

For coaches Andrew Soutar and Christian Jones to lead, coach and inspire such a performance over the last 5 years is staggering. It is unlikely that any side at Caldy’s level will have ever developed and provided an international U20s player whilst that player is still playing 2nd xv level rugby. It says everything about the culture and the environment that Sooty and CJ have created and continue to develop.
