That Friday Feeling – 14th October 2022

After last week’s tough home fixture against Jersey RFC, the Championship has a rest week which for most other Championship squads means a light training week, but as Caldy’s Director of Rugby Gareth Davies explained, this wasn’t Caldy’s approach.

“In the Championship, there are a considerable number of full-time professional sides. These pro sides have a full 40-hour week together, so it is understandable that they will have a break. However, our coaching team only has 4 or 5 hours a week with our squad, so we cannot afford to have a rest week. We have been training as normal and preparing for a tough 2nd XV fixture away at Sedgley Park Tigers on Saturday.”

Caldy’s 2nd XV match against the Tigers at Park Lane is only their 4th league match of the season. Although unbeaten, their lack of games sees the Wirral side languishing in 6th place in the Halbro Premier League. Their opponents are comfortably in 2nd place behind 1st place Fylde Hawks and 2nd team coach Andrew Soutar knows it will be a tough game.

“League competition is a marathon rather than a sprint, and we have time to catch the leaders, but it won’t be easy at Park Lane. Sedgley Tigers are always tough, and they will be confident on their home pitch. I hope we can get good travelling support for the lads. They will need it.”

Coaches Andrew Soutar and Christian Jones have selected the following squad for the game, which kicks off at 2.30 pm at Park Lane, Whitfield, Manchester M45 7DZ.

1. Sanderson 2. Chandigere 3. Parker 4. Ovien 5. Olyott 6. Sanders 7. Davidson 8. Spencer-Wolfe 9. Isaacs 10. Barker 11. Robinson 12. Walters 13. Fletcher 14. Beer 15. White. 16. Oostuhuyzen 17. Ngatchu 18. Williams 19. Holmes 20. Elkerton 21. Cross 22. Gaughn 23. Mouarkach 24. Mountney 25. Smith 26. Jones
