Girls Rugby Report

Three years ago we started on a journey to get girls rugby going again at Caldy. We started with five or six  girls, some weeks just two or three but we kept going. I had three goals at the start – get a girls team going, coach them all to a decent standard so they’d be competitive and lastly, get a few players into the Cheshire squad.

Today we have around 30 girls -some well established and some taking their first steps, we have enough girls for an U13 and U15 team ( two year age bands) and we have competed with and on occasion, beaten some of the more established clubs in Cheshire. For the last couple of months we’ve had new girls turning up almost every week.

Today I’m really proud to share that we have six girls from Caldy selected to the Cheshire County squad and a few more that we think are very unlucky not to make the cut.

A massive thanks to Rowland, Natasha and Rich my fellow coaches and friends but mostly to our talented and amazing girls right across the squad. Some had never played rugby until a year ago so it’s down to their ability and hard work they’ve got this far.  It’s a pleasure to coach them and who knows, one of them might just fulfil my final ambition…..🌹😀

But we’re not done by any means!

Next year we move to three new  age groups with U12, U14 and U16s playing the same rules as boys for those ages. We need bigger squads for the older girls and we need this years, year 6 girls to make up the U12s next season. We also want to make the girls section sustainable so we really need the minis section to have some girls in their age groups so we have girls with rugby experience coming through.

Lastly a big thank you to Lynn and the club committee for their support and for everyone who’s encouraged girls to come and try rugby.  Please spread the word about Caldy girls – we are going places! 👍🏉
