That Friday Feeling!!!

Following last week’s comprehensive 62-10 win against Luctonians, this weekend Caldy travel the length of the M62 to face another newly promoted side Hull RUFC. Last season the Yorkshire side won the North Premier Title at a canter and have made a decent start in National 2 North. Hull opened this year’s campaign with a very creditable away draw in the Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield followed up by a terrific victory away at Stourbridge and then a home win against Tynedale.

Since their good opening run they have suffered a couple of reversals including a narrow loss last week against Chester, but they will be confident in picking up the points against the league leaders as Caldy’s Director of Rugby Gareth Davies recognises.

“It is a few years since we played Hull but we do know quite a bit about them. They have recruited some quality players into their squad with top level experience. Latu Makaafi is a very good and powerful number 8 who helped Coventry into the Championship and Ali Thomson is a big scrummager and ball carrier who has Championship experience with Doncaster Knights and Rotherham. They are going to be very tough up front.”

Although Caldy have got off to a winning start with 5 straight wins Davies has chastening memories of previous visits to Hull. “For some reason we always seemed to be slow starters at Hull and they certainly have the players to take the game away from you if you can’t match them early on. For the first quarter Luctonians pushed us hard last week and if we don’t match Hull early it maybe déjà vu all over again! We are prepared for a very hard and physical encounter.”

The Caldy match day squad is not expected to show many changes from last week although there may be a limited reshuffle in the starting line up as Davies explained. “During our time in National 1 we learned how important it was to keep the squad as fresh as possible and we do look to rotate and manage the players during what is a very long season”

The match against Hull RFC kicks off at the Ferens Ground at 3 p.m.
