Sheffield Tigers v Caldy Preview

Caldy travel across the Pennines this weekend to face Sheffield Tigers, with both sides currently two wins from two this season it is going to be interesting to see how the two sides play against each other.

Caldy are coming off the back of a hard fought victory against Chester. They will be looking to stamp their mark on the league this season and Sheffield will prove the biggest test for the Ravers so far, having beaten Chester on the opening weekend and Scunthorpe 31-27 last week.

Sheffield’s victory at Scunthorpe saw four different try scorers, however the game was full of errors which is common at this time of the season and Caldy will be looking to take full advantage of any unforced errors. Caldy will also be mindful of the Tigers kicking ability with fly half Mark Ireland scoring a total of 14 points at the win against Scunthorpe including a try.

Gavin Roberts will also look to add to his record breaking points tally in Yorkshire this weekend. The Inside Centre scored two conversations and two penalties against Chester to take him past the record previously held by Rich Vasey, now a key member of the Caldy coaching setup.

Caldy have played Sheffield Tigers twice before in their promotion season of three years ago coming out victorious on both occasions winning 34-10 in Sheffield in November 2016 and the return fixture 41-7 at Paton Field in an impressive show of flowing rugby.

This is the first of two key away games for the Ravers. After the trip to Yorkshire this weekend they travel to Loughborough Students who were also relegated from National 1 last season.

Anyone wishing to travel to Sheffield this weekend, trains run from Liverpool Lime Street every hour at an average price of £38 return. The ground is a 15 minute taxi ride away.
