Peter Dodd 1925-2019

Sadly, Peter Dodd passed away on Tuesday 10th September at the age of 94. Many of the older members who went to Calday School will remember Peter as their history teacher and Rugby Coach, not necessarily in that order! He joined the school in 1954 and stayed there until his retirement in 1987. He took over the role of head of Rugby from Tommy Thompson and was an enthusiastic supporter of both the school and the Rugby Club. His proudest moment was when he was in charge of the school 1st XV beating Cowley Grammar School St Helens in 1962 by 5-3. Cowley were one of the top rugby playing schools in the North West and were coached by Ray French who was a St Helens and Great Britain International Rugby League player. Peter was Deputy Headmaster 1971-1978 then acting Head Teacher in 1978 and it was made permanent the same year. He retired in 1987.

After retiring he joined the Last of the Summer Wine Gang helping around the club house and grounds until ill health forced him to give up. He was a regular supporter of the club and would try to make most 1st XV games and would still attend the Last of the Summer Wine’s Xmas parties the last one being 2018. Peter was made a vice president of the club in 1981 and was one of the longest serving Vice Presidents.

His advice and guidance to many pupils and Rugby Players will be sadly missed but his legacy will continue. Our sincere condolences go out to his family.

As soon as we know, the club will be advising members of the date of the funeral and refreshments will be held afterwards in the clubhouse.

We will be having a minutes silence before the Chester game on Sunday and the flag will be a half mast to show respect for both Peter and Mike Honeybourne.
